The league is hopeful the salary could again go up as much as $4.5 for 25/26. Seems plausible given the move from Arizona to Utah. Even if the team breaks even, it’s already a win given the black hole that franchise has been on the league for years.

The current CBA expires in Sept ‘26. Bettman expect talks to resume in early ‘25 and feels optimistic a new deal could be struck as early as next June.

Players have suggested a reduction of preseason games to 4, while adding an additional 2 games in the regular season to 84. This is all preliminary of course, but seems like the two sides are in a good place.

I've always had in the back of my head that he might want to join his brothers someday. There are lots of siblings in the NHL throughout the years, and it hasn't been a ton of this playing together stuff. But the Hughes brothers seem exceptionally close, to each other and their parents. They all (parents included) live and breathe this game. I can just see them making a pact one summer while playing street hockey as kids, after one of them scores the Stanley Cup clinching goal, that some day they should do it for real, on the same team.

I even thought that this thought isn't just mine, and that the decision to make Hughes the captain last season was partly influenced by this possibility. He was a good (not perfect) candidate for the role either way, to be sure. But the impression I get is that Hughes is motivated by loyalty, reciprocity, passion for the game, growth -- in addition to what motivates almost all NHL players (money, competitiveness). Making Hughes captain demonstrates some of that from the club to Hughes, and it also increases the sense of loyalty Hughes has to the club -- its his club. Add that this coaching staff is a great mix of older school values with a modern mindset of learning and adjusting, and its all stuff that must be appealing to Hughes.

Bottom line, the Canucks have done everything they could do to date to create a place where Hughes will want to re-sign. And of course they can (and I suspect will) offer the 8th year and they won't low ball him. But if Quinn Hughes, from a close knit hockey family, elects to live out the dream of close knit hockey brothers, well, could you blame him?

That’s why management should trade Pettersson + for Jack Hughes.
