Politcal Memes, etc

The primary goal of this site is to provide mature, meaningful discussion about the Vancouver Canucks. However, we all need a break some time so this forum is basically for anything off-topic, off the wall, or to just get something off your chest! This forum is named after poster Creeper, who passed away in July of 2011 and was a long time member of the Canucks message board community.

As I've said before, elections don't affect me, and I'll reckon they don't have a large impact on your (most everyone here) life either. Down here I can't vote, or run for office, so most of my comments are "for entertainment purposes only". Or I'll see something that needs a correction, or Doc needs a virtual slap upside the head. ;)

As for politics, I think we're on the same side that most politicians deserve our contempt. The same goes for the media. The "system" is rigged, as we know, and it favours the rich and powerful. All pretty simple stuff that we can agree on, right?

From there, it just gets into details. I've always felt that when it comes to left-right politics, nothing will change, but with the "left" in power, a few more crumbs are fed to those who are most vulnerable in society. I'll go a step further and say that any government or "system" should be judged on how it cares for those who can't help themselves (of course, our definitions may vary on who is included in this group).

It's true that I'm pretty isolated down here, and don't get to see the 'wonders' that a big city has to offer. I don't see the complete failures of programs that lead to massive homelessness and drug addiction. I don't deal with the mentally ill who have no place to turn. On a human level, these are important issues that haven't been dealt with by any North American government and have generally been made worse over the past 20-30 years.

I do care that regulations are in place to keep the air and water safe and that my food is safe. Regulating businesses that don't want to be regulated is something only a government can do. Again something we can all agree on - to a point. Now we start to take sides over the "environmentalist whack-jobs / scientists" or the "job creators / greedy multinationals".

As I've said before, the "system" we've been dealing with since we were born has given us a pretty good life. I'm thankful I don't have to walk to Brazil for a better life for my family. Are there things I would change if I were in power? Probably. Would I insist on a giant overhaul? Not likely.

The media has done an amazing job of making sure that we're distracted by every little issue to the point where we feel "we have to take a side". I don't know what it's like up there, but down here people are letting politics define their life. If the "goal" was to keep us divided and fighting amongst ourselves, then - mission accomplished. Even on this hockey board, we argue and bitch at each other over things that likely don't affect us, and we can't control.

With that said, I'll go back posting what I feel might offer a counterpoint, amuse you, or piss you off. :D

Good post, in general terms I agree with a lot of what you say.

Correction of others is subjective of course.

Pissing off is unlikely.

Bemusement perhaps.

Are you trying to tell us you are perfectly fine with Donald J Trump winning the election?

Do you need a virtual slap upside the head?

 It's the empathy for other that makes me not "perfectly fine" with his election. Of course, the 4 years of chaos will be distracting. And hopefully he won't kill the ag industry around here. etc etc etc

Don't read the Erection thread then (or the Meme thread).

Problem solved.

Or are there other discussions you'd like to see there?

https://www.borowitzreport.com/p/trump- ... assador-to
PALM BEACH (The Borowitz Report)—Donald J. Trump raised eyebrows in diplomatic circles on Saturday by naming the former drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman U.S. ambassador to Mexico.

Trump told reporters that the appointment of El Chapo was consistent with his policy of surrounding himself with “only the best people.”

When asked about El Chapo’s ten felony convictions, Trump said, “I wish he had more, but I still think he’s qualified.”

Trump’s plan hit a snag, however, when El Chapo turned down the post, stating that it would be “embarrassing to serve in the same administration as Dr. Oz.”
