Personally I don’t think Pettersson is going anywhere for at least a couple seasons.
Centres are too hard to find, and management won’t be willing to do the extended rebuild that trading Pettersson would dictate.
They want to (rightly or wrongly) have a two to three year rebuilt. That means they need top six centres in the next two or three years.
Rossi, Chytil, Raty, Sasson, Cootes have not shown they can be reliable consistent top six centres, yet, if ever.
They’ll want to move out the wingers with NMCs if they can, long before they move out Pettersson because they don’t have any legitimate top six centres behind him.

Agreed here - and by management, likely means mostly ownership.

I wonder if the best play would be to keep the kids in Abby, developing - fill their spots with UFAs on 1-2 year show me deals in the offseason and get Foote to open up the style of play. Just all attack, with no defense - full court press. Get EP40's numbers back up to respectability over those 1-2 seasons while the kids marinate in the A - then trade him while his value is at it's "peak" so to speak. No retention. And another 1OA hopefully, due to the porous defense the team will be playing in front of Pantera.

Agreed! Next season will be a shit show again. If at all possible, they should keep their up coming draft picks away from the Canucks next season. Let them develop in the NCAA, SHL, CHL or wherever for one more season. Then bring in a bunch of fairly well developed rookies the season after next. The can run Myers, Boeser and DeBrusk out there night after night for one more year to guarantee another top pick in the 2027 draft. No buy outs, let them earn their pay checks by being the brunt of media and fan outrage while they “do their parts” for the rebuild. Hopefully one of them actually improves to the point he has some trade value without retention.

You have to take into account where the player wants to be. Even if you want to keep him, he may be looking for an out himself.

Someone who fancies himself to be in the upper calibre and is in his absolute prime years, will rarely want to stick it out on a rebuilding lottery team (see Hughes) that is likely not getting a sniff for the foreseeable future.

A player in his situation thinks about his social marketing, earning power (outside of hockey) and legacy. Looking at this current situation, most if not all wouldn't stick around. It's not like the Sedins at the end of their careers wanting to finish up here.

If you can get the most interest from suitors and the best return by retaining 25% or whatever to clean house, the owner should do it. Cleaning should include changing the people hired to run the operations.
