I don't believe it's a #1 'Tuzzi.

It is more along the lines of 90% of Cup winners during that time period have at least one top 3 pick in their lineup.

Ah. I heard variations, some mentioning them all having 1sts. Nevertheless, we never had one, nor a you know...

So, if for the first time ever, we had a first, then there's a better chance of being first for the first time ever... and then we draft dead last in the first round.

I have a thirst for first.

2011 Bruins for.example had a #2, Seguin and a #3, Horton but no #1.

He was a second-rounder if memory serves.

Yeah, fuck. I though he meant 2C and 3C in terms of players..... whoosh.

Couldn't have said it better myself MCP! Agree with you both 100% and indeed please save this post!

I think the best outcome is to keep Petey, draft one of Stenberg or Mckenna and then let them play on the same line. You allow Petey to shelter the criticism, give the young players a talented centre to play with and likely prop up Petey's value while doing so. Then you can offload him. The alternative is to unload Petey for below market value and feed the high end draft picks to the wolves by placing them with... a miscast Marco Rossi at best? No thanks!

To be clear, Rockalt, I didn't exactly call for this. Was just presenting some food for thought whether I made a compelling point or not.

If it was actually up to me, I would definitely look to move Petey asap if possible. I don't hate the guy as much as a lot of people in this market do, but fact is he had a major hand in just how badly this team has fallen the past couple years and much of the blowback is warranted. While he's here he'll always be a lightning rod, the whipping boy tied to the collapse and I just don't see how the relationship between he and the fanbase can be repaired, especially during what will inevitably be a long and painful rebuild.

If you can erase the toxicity for one year while we see if and how his presence can help McKenna/Stenberg (if it is one of them), then maybe. Just not sure you can.
Thanks for clarifying Nuckertuzzi.

I've written a lot on this topic lately but in short I think it's dumb to rush to trade Petey UNLESS they get an awesome offer (which I think is unlikely). I think the Canucks could fetch a better return if they wait for the offseason (at minimum) and be patient.

I also think if they do trade Petey, then they will need to sign middling vets to shoulder the load for the next couple of years (I'm fine with that if the Petey return is awesome but I'm skeptical).

If we don't trade him this offseason, I'm still bullish on him playing better with some high end prospects. I'd still be in favour of trading Petey in the next 2 years but my priority is maximizing return.

This goes out the window if he truly is as toxic as the rumours suggest; I suspect however that is inflated.

Yeah..

...anyway....

Round 2 45 o/a

Also on that team

Marchand round 3 71 o/a
Krejci round 2 63 o/a
Lucic round 2 50 o/a

...amazing what solid post R1 drafting can get you.

Among the many reasons why the Oilers will never win the Cup with their core is because they couldn't draft shit outside of the top 5. As a result, they've had to bolster their lineup via trade and FA, where they could have had kids on ELCs if they drafted half-decent.

Indeed. That was a deep team.

I maintain we beat them if Vigneault and the Sedins could ever have done something besides the cycle.

Like be healthy? We lost the finals there.

H Sedin - back spasms
Kesler - pulled groin
Maholtra - freak eye injury.

That’s where the Canucks lost the finals. Add Hamhuis injury on top of that, didn’t play after game 2, it is a miracle the Canucks took it to 7 games.

O'Halloran
Refs
League
Jacob's
Rome
Luongo

...we were doomed.

But yeah...fully healthy the Canucks were a better team than Boston that year.

To bad Tampa didn't beat the Bruins game 7 Conference Final.

That was the Lafayette goal post moment that post season...

Fully healthy Canucks still lose in the alley to the Bruins.

Boston was built from top line to the crease to beat the skilled cycle game. The Canucks rarely generated shots from the mid/high slot and cross ice passes were far less common than the down low out front or the slap pass from an angle for a redirect.

Thomas was very beatable if you could move the puck east/west. He was so far out of his net though that shooters had nothing to look at and the down low stuff was disrupted either by him or his defensemen. He was Hasek-level in his commitment to that style, and he executed it like few others.

Maybe if the league had actually penalized the blatant holding and interference the Bruins employed the entire series the Canucks had a chance. Especially on the Canucks PP where Boston would be so far beyond the obvious interference or stick infraction that it should have resulted in a parade of 5-on-3’s.

Luongo was another story. We needn’t go there.

Losing Hamhius almost single handedly cost them a cup in my eyes. He was all world that run.
