Glad to see the Leaves settle for the 36-year old!
He's a LHS who can play the right-side.
$3M-per for two years to the old man.
35+ contracts can come back to bite you.
They didn't get either of the 2 young RHD dee they wanted in Hamonic and Stone
... Flames got them both!
Don't get me wrong, I hate the Flames.
But I hate the Leaves much much much more.
I suppose the Leaves could still trade for a RS guy
... but that would create cap trouble for them now.
The other two UFAs the Leaves signed are also old men.
(McElhinney and Dominic Moore)
Gonna make it tough for Tuna to brag about how young his team is.

Fact: Hainsey played the 2nd most ice-time on that Pens D that won the cup. He replaces the terrible Hunwick, who for some reason got 3 years as a UFA.
And it's 2 years, so there is no cap trouble. Look at the numbers, they're fine. 35+ year contracts bite you if they are long-term. Not 2 years for a guy completely healthy who just played great last month and won a cup.
leaves D just got better.

Had such good luck tanking, the leaves already think it's worth another try.

So Shultz, Matta and Daley are far better than Reilly, Gardiner and Zaitsev. What?[/quote]
Yes. Compare the Pens defence to the leaves defence going up against the Washington Capitals. leaves were eliminated in 6 games while the Pens D got it done in shutting down the Caps in game 7. Pens D also shutdown Nashville in games 5 and 6 to win their second straight Stanley Cup. They got it done when it counted and they got it done without their best D-man, Kris Letang. You forgot about him, with Letang in the line up the Pens defence is way better than the leaves. By a country mile.

Fact: Hainsey played the 2nd most ice-time on that Pens D that won the cup.
During the regular season Letang got over 25 minutes while 5 other dee got 20+ minutes.
(including Hainsey)
In the playoffs Dumoulin got 22 minutes while 5 other dee got 19+ minutes.
If you check out Pens message boards you'll see Hainsey is referred to as "Hand Grenade Hainsey".
This is because Hainsey can't make a pass to save his soul and he knows it.
Hainsey will always be remembered in Pittsburgh as the guy who set a league record for icing the puck.
Also Canes and Pens fans have duly noted Hainsey's decline last season in mobility + footspeed.
It's funny how you ripped the Pens dee as being "horrible" in the playoffs
... but now praise the dman Pittsburgh decided to dump!
BigTuna wrote:

Hunswick was the whipping boy in Hogtown because Leafers love them some Polak (for his physicality).
Truth be told, Polak is another Hand Grenade guy who quickly dishes to his partner (Hunswick)
... or dumps the puck out.
Polak created all kinds of problems for Hunswick... who was then unfairly blamed by Polak-loving Leafers.

Hainsey will be 38 by the time this contract expires, he is already "breaking down"... that will continue.

Well the team that won the last 2 Stanley Cups obviously holds the opposite view.
Hunswick made $1.2M with the Leaves last year.
The inferior and ancient Hainsey will make $3M for the next two.
Leaves just got worse.

I like Patty a lot but I'm not sure I give him three years. He still does have wheels but the Dude is 38.

Marleau will be 40.5 years old by the time this deal expires!
Yet another 35+ contract for the Leaves.
Leaves are now the 20th oldest team in the league Mr Tuna.
Leaves go from zero pressure last year to mega pressure next.
(think of the kids!)
A team that is overdue for injuries signs 4 old guys in the last 2 days.
(hey Tuna, if they have great prospects as you say, why are they signing old guys)
As a Leaf-hater I couldn't be happier!

Includes a no-move clause too.

In what world is Hainsey "Breaking Down"? He was 2nd on the Pens in TOI just last month and looked fine. They won the cup.
And LOL at calling Hainsey inferior to Hunwick. I'm sure you thought this highly of Hunwick when he was on the leaves last season. He was included in all your discussions about how horrible everyone was on their D.

What kind of argument is this? It's a team game. it isn't decided only on the blue line. Rielly and Gardiner were skating circles against everyone on Washington.
Yes, Reilly/Gardiner/Zaitsev are easily better than Shultz/Maata/Daley.

Just checked the archives, I've never said anything about either player before.
That's probably because they're merely 3rd pairing guys.
All I said above is that the Stanley Cup Champs dumped Hainsey for Hunwick.
Most players start breaking down in their mid-thirties, Hainsey is no exception.
I've been reading Leaves boards, 95% of Leafers
hate this signing... but not you?
Whether they retire or are bought out, 35+ cap-hits remain on the cap for the duration of the contract.
Speaking of that, no comment on the Marleau signing Tuna?

Well Doc, seems some over there in leavesville seem to think that they can now trade JVR for top four on D and Bozak should bring some nice picks and or top prospects.
And re Marleau, his contract is mostly bonus money paid out July 1 so they can pay his bonus year three and trade his ass after July 1 that year to Vegas for a cap dump. Of course that's if he waives his NMC which of course he'll do because he'll have earned most of his contract by then and will just retire. Which of course is all possible since Vegas or a team like that would love the dead cap hit.
But no cap circumvention here right?

*Looks at Stats* Hainsey has never been a 3rd pairing player. He was just 2nd D-Man on the cup champs. And you're trying to tout the greatness of Matt Hunwick?
That's right, the Pens won the cup with Hainsey 2nd in TOI. And he's never been 3rd pairing, but hey, what are facts, right Doc. Matt Hunwick! You love the guy!
