There's no Auston Matthews without that trade and you know it. It worked out great for the leaves. They got Matthews, Kapanen and Andersen in that move.Strangelove wrote:Mëds wrote:Hey Doc,
Don't you just love how the Leaves are paying Phil Kessel $1.2M per year to (most likely) win back-to-back Cups in Pittsburgh? Brilliant management.
The best part is that they are going to be doing that until 2022! I wonder if they will really find that $1.2M valuable in a couple of years when it's time to give Matthews and Marner both a raise.....this after having to bump up the salary of Nylander the year before.
Absolutely brilliant.

How in Hell (aka Toronto) did the Kessel trade have anything to do with winning the Matthews lottery?BigTuna wrote: There's no Auston Matthews without that trade and you know it.
Leaves had 68 points in 2014–15 with Kessel (did not win draft lottery)
Leaves had 69 points in 2015–16 without Kessel (did win draft lottery)
You should send a sample of that koolaid to the lab...
BigTuna wrote: It worked out great for the leaves. They got Matthews, Kapanen and Andersen in that move.

Kessel + 61st... for Kapanen + 30th + 72nd (all 2016 draft)
Andersen... for 30th (2016) + 50th (2017)
Kessel + capspace* = 2 Stanley Cups thus for for Pittsburgh.
(*Leaves agreed to retain $8.4M on that contract they gave Phabulous Phil)
They should engrave Lou Lamoriello's name on the last two Stanley Cups!

You just nit-pick any stats you, can don't you? In 2014-15', the leaves only had the 4th worst record in the entire NHL. They had terrible odds to get Mcdavid. In 2015-16, the leaves finished 30th overall. As a result, they had the best odds to get Matthews. It's not how many points to get, it's where you finish in the standings.Strangelove wrote:How in Hell (aka Toronto) did the Kessel trade have anything to do with winning the Matthews lottery?BigTuna wrote: There's no Auston Matthews without that trade and you know it.![]()

In 2015-16, the leaves lost the most 1 goal games of any NHL team. They finished just 1 point below Edmonton for 30th. You add a first line star winger in Kessel who never misses a game and there's no doubt they don't finish 30th and likely do not get Matthews.

The leaves got a massive break. They have a horseshoe up their asses the past few years at the draft .Mono is the only reason he did not go top 5. Every draft year there is one player who drops much farther than expected (Cam Fowler. Filip Forsberg to use recent examples).
There is not one scout you can find who says he does not posses elite skating/puck-handling/shooting skills. You never get guys like that at 17.

Do you not know how the draft lottery works? The leaves finished 27th in 14-15. 30th the next year despite actually having 1 more point.

Mike Babcock made the difference actually, That 15-16 team had a lot less talent. Who the f knows. Maybe his sub par defensive play costs them just as many as he wins for them and it's a wash. Maybe his minutes take away from player(s) who helped get and/or keep those at 1 goal games. Maybe he realizes that he hates toronto and phones it in the entire season. Maybe he gets a season ending injury in game one. It's a ridiculous argument. Asanine actually. 《Insert poop emoji here》.BigTuna wrote:So you don't think Kessel gets them 1 more win with those 26 1 goal losses?
