Lot of truth in that graphic!

Though watching a bit of the Hlinka/Gretz Cup the Canucks may have picked a good time to rebuild.

If out of some stroke of luck we can snag DuPont next season and we would likely be near the bottom for a 2028 draft Schultz and Pue look like the real deal.

The Pats should be fun to watch for the next couple years.

An interesting point, and another strong argument for why the Canucks should have been deep in re-build mode in 2015.

If deep rebuild means trading the Sedins and not fumbling Hamhuis, then that could have made a difference. But at the end of the day, it wasn't the ticky tack "retool" moves (Beer Cheese, Granlund, etc.) that made a meaningful difference. (Even turning Bonino into Sutter instead of true futures wasn't that big of a deal though turned out as bad as it could). It was whiffing on 3 of 5 top 10 picks in 6 years and losing the McCann trade. And even then, the Canucks might have rebuilt into a steady consistent team had their "good" players not have brought a bad (or at least not good) ethic to the table and had they not shot themselves in the foot on a guy like Tanev.

First dude seems a decent hire.

Ryan Stewart is the new Canucks director of hockey strategy and player evaluation, which is a new position that will report into Johnson. The 52-year-old from Niagara Falls, Ont. comes to Vancouver after four years as a senior advisor with the San Jose Sharks, where he oversaw Sharks professional staff in North America and Europe.

Stewart previously spent 16 years in the Chicago Blackhawks organization, which saw him steadily rise the ranks, holding the roles of: video coach, assistant coach, amateur scout, pro scout, director of professional scouting, and assistant general manager. He held the role of director of pro scouting when the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup in 2013 and 2015.

“Ryan brings a championship pedigree and a wealth of hockey knowledge to this brand new position,” Johnson said in a Canucks media release. “He is someone we will lean on internally to help provide insight and information for our front office. With all his varied experience, wearing a number of different hats, Ryan is a big asset for our group moving forward.”


The other dude seems more in line with the (alleged) economical approach of the current off season.

In addition to Stewart, the Canucks announced the hiring of Adam Sergerie as a pro scout. The 40-year-old from Thunder Bay, Ont. comes to the Canucks from the WHL’s Penticton Vees, where he worked last season as their director of scouting.

Penticton set a CHL record for most wins in a team’s first season, posting a sparkling 44-14-6-4 record in 2025-26.

Prior to joining the Vees, Sergerie spent four seasons with the Sherwood Park Crusaders in the AJHL and then the BCHL, holding a number of roles, including president of hockey operations, general manager, and assistant coach.

Will this be only internal evaluation, or part of (final say?) scouting?

Hockey strategy? Wouldn't that be the Coach's job?

I suspect that hockey strategy would be the liaison between the coach and management, while also being responsible for the team's strategy when it comes to building the roster and staying on top of what other teams are doing in order to adjust as needed.....both the gameplan as well as build.

Could also be that the Director sets long-term strategy and the Coach implements short-term while preparing to make adjustments as the long-term unfolds.

I'm just talking out of my ass here though.....could be way off.

director of hockey strategy = make sure the team loses.
player evaluation = team starts winning, determine who’s responsible and trade that player for high draft picks.
