9.5 million in Goaltending contracts next year.
its about 10% of the cap

With Lankeyys contract public, It got me thinking... what will the July 1st madness look like this year with regards to the cap jumps the next couple years??

Todays 4.5 Million will be tomorrows 2.9M

Which is fine, IMO.

Lankinen has been our saviour this year. He took a low ball prove it to me offer and delivered. Yikes at cap and term but it speaks volumes.

One, they don't have confidence that anyone in the system is ready for prime time back up let alone starter. Two, they have real concerns about Demko's health or his commitment to the team. Demko, when he is Demko, is all world, Vezina calibre, primo number one starter on any team. But his injuries have now become a major concern. There is a little hypochondria going on here I think. They need to try to rehabilitate Demko to either get back to being Demko or to get back to being a huge trade piece. Didn't he have "concussion" concerns coming out of college that hampered him when he turned pro? Headaches and the like that mystified people? Or am I confusing him with someone else?

Way too much money and term for the Lanky One.

With the cap going up and his and Demko's combined cap hit being 10% of the cap next year, I think the amount is okay. Term is a bit of a concern though but it is a M NTC after season 2. Not a great deal but okay.

I get the 10% thing, for next year - but if he doesn't prove to be anything more than a capable backup (per his career) who can fill in when #1 is injured - they would need to fill the #1 role. Either taking a chance on Demko again, or bringing in another via trade/UFA with likely a larger cap hit than Demko. 4.5 mil is a lot to gamble on what might just be a 1B which is what I think he is at best or a backup.

If he proves to just be a backup, then the NMC, even with 15 teams makes him a very difficult peice to move - without adding sweeteners.

But I do agree, without Lankinen, Van is near the bottom of the league. So hopefully he'll continue to improve.

Sad as it its I don't see a future here for Demko. I don't see this team having a backup come up from farm. So here we are with Lankinen, who has been stable to great at times. A good starter, but not Vezina calibre, but then we have been spoiled lately.

Demko can be traded or bought out and then we can sign a backup in the off-season for less, or keep Demko as the number 2 for another year.

I don’t know which is more exciting, today’s four nation final, or tomorrow’s Trader Jim Friday night yips.
I guess Trader Jim satisfied his yips this morning by way overpaying for a backup.
