Hockey Widow wrote: Mon Feb 03, 2025 11:50 am So now we know Rutherford is the leak. He has been talking out of school and got this all fired up. I wonder if keeping the locker room a safe place is in reference to that? It is a confusing comment to me. Wonder if Allvin will pull a Benning and start whispering into Aquilini's ear to get Rutherford retired.
I think we can be confident that something happened in the room earlier this season. Something Miller - and management, it seems - found irreconcilable. It didn't necessarily involve Pettersson - though it's clear there is no love lost between them. That's based off of what public comments we can derive any insight into the situation.

Credit the room for keeping it in the room - and it's a bit unfortunate for them that Rutherford couldn't keep quiet about it. Rutherford is starting to resemble Trump, in that it's an adventure every time he has a mic on front of him.

Unless the team changes their body-language and performance on the ice, this season looks lost. They have a look of a lifeless team where no one is really happy. Hell, they couldn't be bothered to get the puck for Karlsson's first NHL goal. Barely anyone celebrates anything anymore out there, and most of the celebrations look like they;re going through the motions. The only ones showing any emotion are Sherwood and any new guys who haven't been in the room for more than a game or two. When was the last time you saw Hughes smile or look happy on the ice - even when they're winning?? Chytil's goal celebration stood out for me because he was actually excited after his goal. Too many games guys would score and skate away like, "Yeah, whatever. Life sucks, and we still have the rest of the game to play. Let's just get on with it." Hard to watch a team play hockey like they're on the way to the Gulag regardless the result.

I don't know what will do the trick to turn this team's morale around - winning games looks like a threadbare patch-over at this point - whether it's new coaches, new players or new management. Until it does, I'm not sure even the wins will make a lick's worth of difference to the season at the end.
They do look like a lifeless bunch most nights.
If they could play with the same enthusiasm the Flames play with they'd have 10 - 20 more points

They need a testicle transplant. They play scared

Need some angry Blob McKenzie types to crash the net like Jim Benning was in net and make space for the skinnies

As players sign new contracts now and in the seasons to come, this context will be important to consider. Salaries should rise quickly and throw old comparables out the window. A $5 million cap hit today (5.68 per cent) is equal to about a $6.5 million cap hit against a $113.5 million upper limit. Likewise a $10 million cap hit today (11.3 per cent) is equal to about what a $12.9 million cap hit will be in 2027-28.

In the meantime, deals signed in the recent past will also take a new form. As the cap rises, the burden of today's contracts will become less and less. If a player is on a $5 million contract today that runs another three or more years, that AAV will be equivalent to a $3.9 million cap hit in 2027-28.

The most noticeable area of this shift will be seen on the most expensive star contracts though

IF Petey returns to top form (consistently) in a few years his value cap-hit-wise would be among the best in the league.

We HAVE to learn to win without him. If we take them too lightly, we will lose. We can't have Demko making those kinds of saves he did last night.

M Pettersson re-signed. 5.5 mil per year for 6 years. Glad it is under 6 mil AAV.

Good signing, IMO.
