Funny choices!
4-5 upside.
To get there, he will have become extremely good at reading the play because his ability to recover from a misread is low.
But I like that he plays the game "forward", I like that he doesn't play with a panic.
He isn't a Luke Schenn light. If he bounces it off the glass as plan A or takes way too long to get the puck off his stick, he's never going to make it. It was great to play against Schenn the other night.

They should be pumping and dumping UFAs they don’t plan on resigning, not rookies with good potential who are just starting their ELCs.

The kid is barely 21. His skating has improved big time since 2023. He's got decent edges and his pivoting is getting better. Needs a bit of work skating backwards though. He is a 6/7 right now at 21. Maybe he catches a bit of lightning in a bottle and breaks out like Alex Edler did. Or maybe a Matty O

. There's some raw physical tools.
The correct poll to run is what is his floor? He could end up as a top pairing guy with his skill set or he could perhaps at minimum be a 4/5 guy and have a Murray Baron/ Derek Forbort type career/ impact.
He may be trade bait. They need a high end forward. He could be part of a package. They have a couple other nice young LD, in Mynio and KK. Hughes is the wild card. They need to know his plans next summer. If he doesn't want to re-up then you need to move him for a haul. Or if you get Quinn re-signed then perhaps Hronek moves. Maybe Wilander? Myers has a couple more years left in him. I never got the hate for Myers. Sure he was overpaid to begin but he does more good than bad. Similar to 55 and 3 in some ways. Mancini looks like a defent player down the road.
Sorry if that melted into a post about the D, but good long term teams are built through their ass end.
I like the kid. He is an AHL allstar his first year and he's not embarrassing him in the NHL. The kid is a phsical specimen. Gonchar and Foote should have some say.

Its hard to say this early if he will be productive offensively. To be half of Edler he would have to improve in that area. One thing for sure if his good play continues it will be nice to have an ELC back there. I'd like to see Forbert back for 2-3 years at a reasonable deal as well. He is one of the mainstays on a very good PK.
The other ELC next year will probably be Mancini although they will have decisions to make on McWard. I think Willander, unless he blows everyone away, is destined to Abbotsford after burning a year on his ELC this year. So having 2 ELC on D plus an affordable Forbert will go a long way towards cap management.
I don't see DPetey being in the top 4 unless we have injuries. Perhaps in some games as game management depending upon how everyone is playing game to game. That doesn't mean I see that as his potential just the reality of the pecking order on the left side.
DPetey would have to come in and blow the doors off to earn a top-4 spot. With the current top-4 being Hughes, Hronek, 3Pete, and Myers, if DPetey does that then Allvin will have to trade his newest acquisition of 3-Petey who is WAY to expensive to be on the bottom pair. I would be very OK with that because it would open up $5M in cap.....
Willander also would need to wow the league to make it worth keeping him with the big club rather than develop in Abbotsford.
Maybe in 2026-27 we have.....
Hughes - Hronek
3Pete - Myers
DPetey - Willander

Or….see how Mynio and KK are progressing at the end of next season. Hold on to them all. Go with Meaty, DPetey, KK and Mynio as the LHD depth.
This would allow for the blockbuster one-for-one trade of LHD Quinn Hughes for the first pick in 2026 - Gavin McKenna.

I assume you mean that only if Hughes doesn't intend to sign long term.

Not necessarily, if Willander, Mynio, or KK look good QBing a NHL PP, and Gavin continues to look generational, I’d have no problem making that trade.
17 year olds scoring at 54-37-84-121 pace don’t come cheap.
Anyway it’s more than a year away before an offer like that would have to be considered.
Pittsburg might not want to trade the first over all pick that they got from the Canucks in the Meaty trade.

Haha. That would be sick irony eh. The Penguins get to draft McKenna in Crosby's last couple seasons and build around another generational talent.

If Pittsburgh gets Mckenna it will likely be with their own pick. JT Miller is a sure fire lock for the HHOF. The way his nuts get C kicked here I expect nothing less than a cup or three in NY.

After his first 2 games he's sucked worse than Peterson

Mynio looks like the next coming of Brent Sopel. Similar IQ’s. I wouldn’t hold your breath on this kid as a sure fire NHL player.

I do like the fantasy of moving Hughes for a 2026 top pick but the receiving team will not be a bottom feeder team we’d be trading him, secondly, said wouldn’t be gutting their roster, farm and picks to land him unless there were assurances of resigning him. I got the feeling Quinn ends up in Jersey in two years. That’s our most likely trade partner if it comes to that.
