Leading up to the draft everyone kept saying the Canucks need to draft a Defenceman. The last time they did so was Luc Bourdon. It’s hard to find defencemen in the draft. The Canucks drafted 3 wingers in the previous 3 first rounds - Shinkaruk, Virtanen and Boeser. They were deep with wingers in the pipeline but not Defenceman. Was it the best choice? No. Obviously. But that’s the nature of the draft when drafting 18 year olds. It won’t be the last time where the choice made wasn’t the best choice. Benning has done remarkably well since that draft with his choices, but because of the good run I’m assuming we are bound for a dud soon.

That was also the draft Jimbro let everybody know they were targeting Piere luc Dubois, Columbus snagged him ahead of us, plan B hasn't worked out (so far), and Jimbro hasn't tipped his hand since.

Keep in mind he was young for his draft class. He’s not much older than Petey. He will come around, those two untimely injuries in which each required surgery really fucked with his development

I didn't say it was a reach to pick OJ at all. I knew at the time everybody had him as one of if not the best D prospects in the draft. I knew that we needed a D prospect badly. I also knew, at least from having read a bunch of scouting reports and draft lists, that there was a clear top tier of 5 players then a drop off to the 2nd tier which OJ was on. And one thing I know about drafting, especially when picking so high, is to always always always go for b.p.a. best player available regardless of positional needs. So I feared we'd succumb to the temptation of prioritizing needs over keeping it simple and sure enough...
That said, it wouldn't have been much a mistake if OJ actually lived up to his billing, then there'd be no issues at all. So I don't really blame JB for taking what he thought would be the best D available when we really needed one. There's still time and hope for OJ, I'm super patient with prospects as you know with my feelings on Jake, so haven't given up on him at all. Let's hope it works out, we fucking need him bigtime to become something now more tham ever with all the uncertainty on D.

Calgary was taking OJ if we didnt.

Of course Dude is, he posts in those threads for 2-3 years pre draft. Plenty of time to change one's mind c(and not after the fact, like some posters at other boards with a "track record").

Actually nvm, Dude also changes his mind after the fact all the time. One of the most enjoyable things to observe on board

I could care less about track records or homework. But if you read the draft thread Dude is briefly on the Petterson bandwagon and then hitches his wagon to Glass and Vilardi in the last week to ten days before the draft. He ranks those guys ahead of Pettersson consistently leading up to the draft. Pages 45-47 of the 2017 draft thread are great reading.

It’s funny all the pro scouts had Veleno, McIsaac and Wise going top 5 a year prior to their drafts but it’s a travesty if ole Chef gets pigeon holed with his scouting reports at certain time periods. Adjustments

BTW ole Doyle was angry we took Madden instead of Wise
