If Louie goes to Utica he will collect his full salary, he doesn’t have a two way contract. The 1M savings goes to us on the cap.ESQ wrote: ↑Sat Jul 27, 2019 11:49 pmWell, it's not like it's $7-9 million in a lotto ticket/lump sum, he'll be missing out on $1 million for the rest of this year to ride the buses in Utica for 8 months.Strangelove wrote: ↑Thu Jul 25, 2019 2:29 pm
Mutual termination would cost Loui $7-9M cash = not gunna happen.
Once he realizes it's Utica or waive for Ottawa, he'll waive.
Luongo retired and walked away from his $1 million salary this year.
And, if Loui agrees to terminate this contract, he can to sign with Dallas for $1.5x2, then he's only out $4 mil and one year of a contract.
So, as I said, imo it's still the most likely outcome (other than the boring option of him playing out the year in Vancouver, which is actually the likeliest)

I know, but after receiving his bonus, his real salary for the year is $1 million.Hockey Widow wrote: ↑Sun Jul 28, 2019 8:20 am If Louie goes to Utica he will collect his full salary, he doesn’t have a two way contract. The 1M savings goes to us on the cap.

Loui would be walking away from the $9M still owed him in his contract.
And as I keep saying, I'm convinced the league would force him to pay back the $4M bonus.
It's not "likely" the guy is going to walk away from up to $13M.

Sure, but I think it's not likely a guy who's earned $55 million in his career will ride buses in Utica for $1 mil.Strangelove wrote: ↑Sun Jul 28, 2019 12:47 pm It's not "likely" the guy is going to walk away from up to $13M.

Out of curiosity, why would the league force him to pay back the bonus? They didn't pay it - would it be the Canucks? What if the Canucks said they would carry the cap hit for the year?Strangelove wrote: ↑Sun Jul 28, 2019 12:47 pm

Also, if he has 9 still left owing to him, maybe his agent can find a 2 year deal at 2.5 per making it walking away from $4 mil - so that means for just over $2 mil (after taxes) he can get out of his situation and play at the NHL level instead of riding the buses and not so fancy hotels for road games in Utica.

Like I say, it's just a guess, but I think the NHL would see it as Cap Circumvention.Strangelove wrote: ↑Wed Jun 26, 2019 3:25 pm I doubt the NHL would allow Loui to keep his bonus money if he retires.
Such a thing has never happened and I'm pretty sure there's nothing in the CBA that covers it.
The NFL went through this with Barry Sanders when he retired in 1999.
It had never happened in the NFL and nothing in the CBA.
In the end NFL saw to it that Sanders returned the signing bonus.
If the NHL let it go it would set a precedent.
Other teams could give a big bonus in the year they and the player (wink wink nudge nudge) want to be the last year
... and arrange the contract in such a way as to to bring down the AAV.

Unless the Canucks agree to eat that $4 mil cap hit for the year. Which is 2 mil better than having him with the big club and a million better than having him play in Utica - next season the full 6 is off the books.Strangelove wrote: ↑Thu Aug 08, 2019 3:08 pm

If the bonus was any bigger than it wouldn't make sense.

Re: Vancouver's Hockey "Media"
What I'm saying is I don't think the NHL would let the Canucks do that because of the precedent it would create.
Don't forget Loui would collect $27-$28M of a $36M contract at the halfway point of that contract (cap circumvention?).
