Based on Rutte glazing Trump and "agreeing" to a future framework for Greenland (ie. US military taking over "for the long-term") mere hours after the Orangeman's
speech rant.
I mean, that's how I see it.
It sucks, but it's what I have been expecting too, Carl. And Trump's gloating tweet seems to confirm it. But we'll see how it shakes out.

I saw it as another "Taco Tuesday" - who knows what was discussed - and although I'm not a high-level-international-diplomat, I'm assuming there's a LOT of talks that need to be held about the future of Greenland.

Trump is acting like Johnny Sack, or Phil Leotardo from the Soprano's, and his supporters are eating it up. It's disgraceful.

That's okay Corn, Trump doesn't have any professional diplomats in his crew either. He doesn't really do diplomacy; it's kind of beneath him.

Taco went up on stage with Rutte to say the US won't be using force to take Greenland now, after threatening to do so.
That's because NATO already caved.
I mean, you can't really blame the spineless leaders of the EU and NATO. How are they going to resist after that 15 member German army decided the island was too cold to protect?

There is no way Denmark is giving away Greenland, and all EU countries have their back.
What I have heard rumoured though is a suggestion that the US military bases there could become recognized as US territory, much like an embassy is. This would not really change anything, as they already have welcomed US military presence there, since WW2, but with the right phrasing it might be something that Trump could show off as a victory, while the Danes would not really be giving up anything.

They're stuck between a rock (Russia) and a hard place (a suddenly hungry USA). It's a shitty position to be in when you've let your guard atrophy over decades.
And we over here are a nice light snack.

You're over there, Per. I hope what you're hearing is true.

Yeah it could be like the USMCA all over again. Lots of bluster about Trump WINNING yet minor differences from NAFTA. I figure a few extra military bases allowed, maybe some vague promises about joint exploration for minerals. Trump is already looking at the next thing.

Not just a few. During the height of the cold war they had at least 18 military bases on Greenland. Now they have just one.
Greenland is huge and only has some 60,000 inhabitants, so assuming that the US really wants to station that many people in such a desolate place, they can probably get permission to reopen all the old ones.
And when it comes to mineral extraction I assume US companies may stake claims more or less like any other mining company.
Topper may know more on this topic, but it is quite common that mines are owned and operated by foreign companies all over the world.
At present most of Greenland is covered by massive ice sheets though, so extraction may be complicated and expensive.

Geologicaly, Greenland is Laurentia, like the Canadian Shield. The mineral potential is great but like any Arctic region, not an easy place to work or operate. Google tells me there is a gold mine currently operating. I do recall the Black Angel mine (Pb-Zn, Cominco) from years ago. Think of the Polaris Mine on Little Cornwallis Island in the Canadian Arctic that could only ship ore and bring in major supplies one or two months a year.
Apparently there are some interesting rare earth projects being looked at.
I'm currently studying the tectonic history of western North America, and for contrast, much of Alaska, north of the Brooks Range, is Baltica (Scandanavia, northern Europe derived). The mantle hot spot that Iceland is currently on top of, Greenland passed over in the last 90 million years meaning there should be quite a bit of young volcanism now buried beneath the ice sheet.

So that's why they call it "Greenland"

One interpretation I have read is that once Rutte got him sitting down and paying attention, and explained all of the access that the United States
already had to Greenland, Trump was able to understand that it was enough. So, since it was everything he wanted, he declared victory in successful negotiations.
