Was kidding. You’re generous, I couldn’t justify hiring green kids at $30.00 an hour. It’s $25.00 where I start with kids still on the tit who have never swung a hammer which is absolutely painful for me at that.

Yeah....I found 30 to be the magic number where it became an opportunity for less shit and more moldable clay.

It's up to them at that point.

They can put in an effort & be making upwards of $45 in 3 - 5 years or down the road in 3 months.

$25 is a solid number though.

Still need to weed out the riff raff as you well know.

Hard part for me is that labour is the most contentious line item of all the line items. It’s a challenge. Clients have a limit yet guys want $$$ more than they deserve.

Do you have bonus structure in place for jobs that come in under budget?

The best way I have experienced in a competitive market to keep dudes around is annual retention bonuses and generous benefits.

Wage scales aren't the end all be all for the type of people you want to retain (stable, youngish but not too young family oriented folks).

But yes, I agree, project and annual bonus payouts based on individual job profitabilty, y/e bottom line net as well as overall performance works wonders.

We also bonus out based on other items.

I.e. tool and equipment and vehicle condition post season.

Estimator/account manager, superintendent, coordinators and office staff are handled much the same way.
