Re: Canucks News N Notes 24-25
Shane Malloy on SN650 just confirmed a stark fact that we all kinda knew but interesting to hear it laid out.
In the past 15 years the Canucks produced a total of 15 NHL players through the draft. By far worst in the league.
By contrast the Kings produced 40 in the same stretch (with a couple of Cups to show).
Gotta have as much or less to do with drafting/developing than simply piss poor asset management.
To me the whole Dickinson thing is a perfect indictment of what’s wrong this team. Giving up a 3rd rounder to get him, then giving up a 2nd to get rid of him a year later. A shitty move from one management group passes the baton to the next to follow up with another. All told a 3rd and 2nd thrown away for 5 goals total. It’d be so freakin’ hilarious if it wasn’t so sad.
So 15 years, eh. Aquilinis bought the team when, 20 years ago? Hmm?

Damn - that sucks. It's gonna be a LONG summer with more posts like that. And until management gives us something to start feeling better about the upcoming season, we may as well go down that path.
Over a month to the draft - that's going to be an eternity!

Not sure if this has been discussed yet, but what do u doods think of the rumors that the Aquas are thinking about selling the team?Nuckertuzzi wrote: ↑Mon May 05, 2025 5:06 pm So 15 years, eh. Aquilinis bought the team when, 20 years ago? Hmm?

At first, I thought it was just online/media speculation, but then they released that statement and then one of the bros steps away. Can't help to wonder if there is some truth to the rumour.

They may sell the team: Guess what.... then its moving. Maybe we get an expansion team or a team moves here. The value is in the land. They won't sell the land. So while there's a couple parcels in the city, it would be challenging to get to games with the current infrastructure. Worse than it currently is. Move the team to Surrey? Maybe.... The only other option is to knock down all the old buildings at Giggle Mountain. As someone who lives in the area, the traffic here is fucked as is. Then again sometimes these players play like Essondale patients, so there's that.
The drafting has been shit since 2005 full stop. Utter fucking garbage for 20 years, not 15. Just complete crap. Good teams get a couple decent to good players every fucking year.
What has this team harvested in 20 years? A blob of shit.
Allvin and Rutherford have only had three drafts and their oldest guys drafted are 21, so I'll cut them some slack on that at the moment.

Yep, let's be honest drafting's been shit forever. But make no mistake, the shitty drafting numbers from the past 20 years are a direct result of the Aquilini mandate. So many assets thrown away to chase immediate goals with fruitless results.
The times we traded Burrows, Hansen and Bieksa for prospects/picks were few examples I can think of during their ownership where management went against the mandate and actually manufactured assets from diminishing ones. Far too few. That is awful when you can count them all in one hand over a 20 year stretch.

Re: Canucks News N Notes 24-25
This offseason seems the most significant for this franchise since 2009, when the question was whether the Twins would re-sign. I haven’t been this anxious about the next season. This team either rebounds, goes back to the playoffs and wins a round; or they hiccup out of the gate again, fight but stumble short of the playoff bar.
Petey needs to come to Jesus like a death row inmate.
Baldy needs to get his elbow-high gloves and an apron out on this roster to get the 2C and top-6 winger upgrades the team needs.
Hughes needs to get hitched to a good Vancouver girl.

My frustration with this regime is not drafting. So far we need to give them an incomplete grade but it's looking pretty decent I would say. Lekk looks OK with the limited look we've had. Willander we don't know anything about yet but can definitely see the promise from his two WJCs. D.Petey is a find, think we can call that a win. Kudryavtsev looks promising, could be a find. Brzustewicz, tho traded, already has an NHL appearance under his belt. Mynio sounds like there could be something there. Plus a few more outside possibilities.
So, no major wins yet but there's good promise. If they can produce 5/6 NHLers from the draft that's already a better clip than the ratio for the previous regimes. My frustration is with throwing away picks and the lack of acquiring any when chances were there. We cannot afford to go through another year without selecting in the first round and I fear that's going to be the case again.

Yup, as you know, Chef loves to build through the draft. Blob will state otherwise, but what he fails to recognize that once you peel back the many layers of Chefs stuff, he’s a draftist through and through. The shit show drafting began with a the Gillis era and has continued to this day. We are tired of it, done with it, so fuck right off with yer shite, Aqualini’s and please for the love of Atheists, save your picks and build through the draft!
