I think the biggest difference is mindset. Dats wanted the puck, it was his puck. He knew exactly what he wanted to do 4 steps ahead, Petey is younger and is still figuring that part out. That and EP has expectations Dats didn’t ever have to meet until he’d put it altogether.
His Will was iron-clad. Petey I’m not even sure wants to be in Vancouver at times.
That being said, I have to laugh at the “improvement” Matthew’s gets lauded over on the defensive side. Petey at 50% is a much better two-way player. Matthews is responsible and that’s about it.
