I got the figure from Reuters:
https://www.reuters.com/world/us/trump- ... 025-02-21/

... but yes, I also see the 271k figure elsewhere, so I asked AI to explain:
In 2024, total deportations under President Joe Biden reached 312,000, including 271,484 carried out by ICE during fiscal year 2024. This marked the highest annual deportation number since 2014 and surpassed Trump-era peaks. Additionally, broader repatriations (including voluntary returns and expedited removals) totaled approximately 678,000 by November 2024. Most deportations involved migrants apprehended at the border rather than those arrested in the U.S. interior.
The total deportations figure works out to 57K per month.

So Biden’s ice became more effective in an election year where his (and then Harris’) opponent made it a top issue. After years of saying it couldn’t be done without legislation. Record deportations/interdictions with record attempted entries.

One can argue Biden got it better after years of getting it wrong, you can argue the first policy was the the best, but I don’t see how one can, with a straight face, argue that Trump is not a primary reason for decreased entry attempts and voluntary repatriation. Sometimes people are so “all good” “all bad” they can’t see that good guys have shortcomings and bad guys have broad range successes.

Yeah I wouldn't argue against Trump himself being the main reason attempted entries have gone down.

UW, while you're here, what do you think of Trump's attempt to deport green card holder Mahmoud Khalil for "sympathising with Hamas." Seems like a direct attack on free speech.

Reserving judgment because I don’t know if “for sympathizing with Hamas” is a complete reason for the revocation of the green card and initiation of deportation proceedings. The thing about the stories are that the government will make its case in court and Khalil is making his case in the press, and we can’t assume that we know everything that went into the arrest and deportation determination. I’ve had experience with analogous situations, heart tugging stories in the media that has no idea what all the facts are….

Should a person’s green card status be revoked for their speech activities? No, absolutely not. Should a person’s speech activities insulate them from revocation and deportation for other reasons? No, absolutely not. The devil will be in the details.

Interesting take...My two cents...

It's been been a top issue for Republicans for years which is why Trump made it a foundation policy in 2015...

Or have we forgotten that he promised to build a wall which Mexico would pay for?

The argument I remember Democrats had with the wall wasn't that tighter border security was needed, it was that they thought there were more efficent and cheaper ways to tackle the issue using technology...

8 years later, we surely can understand the walls shortcomings not to mention the cost to keep it maintained which speaks to the Democrats concerns....

At some point the Republicans have to pivot away from mass deportations in the millions and start addressing the void doing so
creates for buisness in the labour market...

When asked about the higher cost of manufacturing in the US and the affordability issues that creates, the labour secretary responded by essentially saying that robotics would replace humans as a way to keep costs down...

Removing the cheap labour the immigrants provided will only escalate the move to total robotics...For many Americans who complain that there jobs were taken away from them by illegal immigrants their complaint one day will be that there jobs were taken away from them by AI and robotics...

It's like playing a game of whack a mole, solving one crisis does nothing more than create another crisis...

Like robotics/mechanization hasn't been a thing when there is high immigration?

That said, there are no solutions, only trade offs. That's always the case.

But I would certainly prefer an economy that's less dependent on black market labor for a number of reasons.

While in Canada the Liberal dipshits have just published a report that defines criticism of anti-Israel activities as racist. It also defines “Shariah Law” and “Jihad” as benign terms.

Which is why American free speech laws are superior. The government should not be allowed to define what is and is not acceptable speech.

Ukraine has just agreed to a ceasefire.

‼ Breaking: US-Ukraine Talks in Saudi Arabia: Putin-Trump Plan Unveiled 🇺🇸🇺🇦

🇷🇺Russia’s demands for a truce (per the screenshot):

1. Ukrainian Armed Forces withdraw from Russia’s Constitutional territories - including parts of right-bank Kherson and Zaporizhia.

2. Zelensky resigns, power shifts to Ukraine's parliament's (Verkhovna Rada) head Stefanchuk.

- Sequence: Ukraine retreats all forces out of 4 oblasts and Kursk, and also throws out Zelensky competely. Only THEN negotiations begin with Stefanchuk. Why Stefanchuk? When Zelensky is gone, Ukraine’s constitution positions him as the temporary legal authority, enabling binding agreements with Russia without elections - speeding up the peace process.

- Catch: The parliament must still vote yes to this with a constitutional majority, as it alters Ukraine’s territory.

🔥Russia’s play is clear: neutralize Zelensky’s regime, redraw the borders, then talk.

It also sounds like Trump is resuming weapons shipments.

Trump says he hopes Putin will agree to the ceasefire. I'm not getting my hopes up.

Maybe yesterday's drone attack on the 'burbs of Moscow had some impact. Lex Fridman was in Moscow and posted the attacks were close to where he was staying. how close????
Over the Internet, you can pretend to be anyone or anything.

I'm amazed that so many people choose to be complete twats.
