Soderberg to Coyotes for Connauton and a 3rd.
Connauton is filler -- will slot in somewhere between 6-8 on the Avs depth chart. This is little more than a salary dump -- but not a necessary dump. No one is in better position than the Avs with respect to the cap.
Rantanan is about to get paid. But even with that, they have a ton of room to add in free agency, and they have a ways to go to be cap compliant. They will have to decide whether they want to go with Graubauer or aim for someone like Bobrovsky. And I suspect that they won't just hand over the #2 center spot to Jost; so maybe they will run at some second tier centers (e.g., Johansson, Dzingel). But they can have anyone they want if the question is money, including anyone who wants a shot at the Cup. This team is situated really really well to make a run.

Well, yeah, but they also had like 5 career years in the roster last season, which got them squeaking on to the playoffs and to the 2nd round for the first time in a decade. They could have 1 injury and wind up out of the playoffs.UWSaint wrote: ↑Tue Jun 25, 2019 10:10 am Soderberg to Coyotes for Connauton and a 3rd.

They do have a ton of flexibility with only five forwards currently under contract....but they only have five forwards under contract.

23 year olds having career seasons is not shocking....ESQ wrote: ↑Tue Jun 25, 2019 11:04 am Well, yeah, but they also had like 5 career years in the roster last season, which got them squeaking on to the playoffs and to the 2nd round for the first time in a decade. Yes, they only have 5 signed, but with 5 RFAs that are very likely to be re-signed. 4 of the 5 are contributors at various levels in the top 12. That's leaves 3 to sign to round out the roster. And they can go big with the room or go smaller.
It is a good defense -- no need to add. They will be getting likely excellent contributions from 2 on ELCs (Girard and Makar) who have really high ceilings. And they just drafted another. Few teams can be as excited about a young defenseman as the Canucks are with Hughes. But I'd trade Hughes for Makar, that's how good he is. Their defense is deeper than the Canucks, better now, and has more untapped potential.
The Avalanche have 2 already franchise caliber forwards who are getting better. And the 26 year old grizzled vet who is very good. A very young, very good top line. Rantanen will be pricey, but Landeskog and Mackinnon provide value far beyond their salaries. It is arguably the top line in the game. Teams load up against them and it doesn't matter.
Basically, the Avalanche have everything right now the Canucks would hope to have in a year if Pettersson and Boeser take a step or two forward. And they have it without a single bad contract.
To put this off like "they've only made it to the second round once in a decade" is sophistry. There are vectors in a rebuild. The Avalanche are now in the slipstream. It is damn near perfect what they have in front of them and there are no mistakes they have to work around.
Of course they could be knocked off stride with a major injury. Most teams could. But they have the cap space to make moves to better withstand that. No team right now has this combination of proven high end youth and no weights holding them back.

Kerby Rychel is not being qualified by the Flames. In 43 NHL games, Rychel put up 3G 11A, 0.33 ppg, not too shabby for a 3rd/4th liner. Since the Canucks lack NHL depth on the left side, JB should give Rychel a shot.
