Nice to see we have Salo and Edler replacements coming in a few years from this draft.

What I was actually doing was: Calling you wrong for suggesting trading for OEL would shorten our window somehow.
That's exactly what I think it could do.

We have too many players to replace and sign now and over the next two to three years. His contract is huge and it is restrictive for a long
period of time. We need to build around Pettersson, Hughes, Horvat. Be nice if that could be done all from within the organization but it can't.
I like the player, not the amount of cap he'll take.

Not enough room for OEL's contract??

Gonna need to see your math there Gomes...

Glad to see Jimbro grad a few more D-prospects, but the real Canuck-action happens tomorrow with their UFA's

Eriksson out all by himself covers 70% of OEL's cap hit.

Baertschi coming off the books next year (if not before) will cover the remainder.

So it's two players out (one non-roster and the other non-essential) to bring in one key piece of a new core.

Edler coming off the books next year gives us $6M in free space.

The math seems simple.

Yup, lots of room for OEL moving forward.

Coupled with the parts going to AZ it does have the potential of shortening the window a few years, especially if his play starts to decline in a few years.

For what it's worth here's the latest rumour from the 4th period:
"To offset salaries and come out compliant under the salary cap, it is believed the Canucks are trying to include centre Brandon Sutter and his $4.375 million cap hit in a deal. Canucks restricted free agent forward Jake Virtanen may also be part of a package, along with a 2021 first-round draft pick and at least one of Vancouver’s top prospects."

This is only a part of the article, the gist of it is somewhat alarming in that it's seeming more and more like the Canucks want OEL more than AZ wants to unload him, at least that's the sense I get. We all know what happens when AquaBenning wants a player(s) badly.

I personally would not mind getting OEL as I don't believe as a team we will take a step forward until we make significant improvements to our D and it's extremely rare someone of that quality becomes available to you. So I do understand it's something we have to look hard into because who knows when another opportunity like this will arise. That said, the cost of another 1st rounder AND a top prospect (guessing meaning Pod, Hog or Rath and not OJ or Lind) is tough to swallow. Knowing this regime's pattern I can definitely see us caving on this one and surrender some more of our valuable futures in favour of a better shot in the next 2 to 3 years.

The Mild caught a huge break with Rossi falling into their laps. Probably the 3rd or 4th best player in the draft.
