I love the Sedins but Linden putting their needs ahead of the team is the catalyst as to where we are now. I would love to see this team unload the Sedins ahead of the next deadline as it would go a long way to helping our future but we have Mr. Safe - Linden in the way of that. The Sedins - are ahead of the organization because of a weak leader who values loyalty to players instead of the organization. Same apllies to Tanev because by the time this team is ready, Tanev will be old, broken and a burden on the cap. I agree with Tiger Williams - Lindens organizational leadership is the problem.
Im inclined to believe that there's something to what you're saying RD. Ericksson is here because of the Sedins and Edler will likely stay here due to Linden as well (Linden's wife is friends with Edler's wifeapparently). Team mgt has to be more business-like, an players have to be viewed as assets, or potential trading chips to make the team better; and all of this is predicated on holding on to a vision and some balls in being able to make some calculated risks. Moving Burrows and Hanson for picks didnt really involve much of a risk, but thankfully they were done. It'll be intersting to see if they're going to be able to set themselves up for some meaningful resource mgt moves in the near future... I'll be surprised if they make any moves beyond simply following thru with acquiring their draft selections.

Thanks to Anaheim advancing, Dallas gets their 1st round pick (Eaves).

Tanev and Columbus' 2nd for 3rd Overall and Lehtonen? :D
Stars fans really want Heiskainen(sp) a young LD, they assume if they don't pick him at #3 the Avs will.
So it'll be a tough go to get that #3 even if we try to swap the #5 thanks to the Avs needing a dman as well.

If you want to convert Tanev into a 1st rounder, the best teams to target is the Sabres, Redwings, leaves and maybe the Lightning - speaking of which for Drouin (Only way they see him being traded is for a legit young RHD #2 to partner Hedman).

leaves want the Reilly - Tanev combo.

TBL: Hedman - Tanev.

Redwings: DeKeyser - Tanev.

Benning would probably win a lot of fans if he can trade for Drouin.

We could certainly use him. Like the Gudbranson deal, it's the price he's willing t pay that's worrisome.

Exactly, it's why I wish they'd hire Lombardi who has some solid GM trade experience, let Benning be the scout GM, who looks for young talent to trade for, while Lombardi can assist in the more veteran player trade negotiations.

Seems JB and Linden listen to their coach too much in trades, Willie vouched for a lot of his players and those were bad ideals.

JB and Linden need an experienced GM guy to bring in to help facilitate trades. (senior advisor/assistant GM) whatever you want to call it. ...also I think TL was trying to bring in Pat Quinn (rip) for assistance.

If they can't or don't want to bring in an experienced GM as an assistant/advisor for trades, then I hope Benning sticks to trading vets for prospects and picks as he's done well in this regard.

All this is so totally bang on for sure. The team must make the decisions necessary to move forward.
I think you can do this with respect and complete dignity. To be ridiculously loyal can only stagnate the situation for all concerned, even the players that may be ready to move on to the next chapters of their lives.
They could find themselves in a better, more rewarding circumstance as well.

It's a fine line though. The GM has to break a few NMC, but still keep Vancouver as a destination for future UFA players, and ensure that future NMC/NTC clauses do discount the salary. If the GM is seen as an a$$hole, that does not happen. OTOH, if he is seen as a schmoo/shmoe/schmuck, then he is behind the 8 ball on all negotiations.

Benning seems to be right in the middle, where he should be.

I've been hoping to find a way to get Drouin here ever since he was first having problems with S.Y.

Probably a bullshit offer but I'm hoping a Chris Tanev + Baertschi + 2nd rounder ought to do it.

If we had to trade Drouin for cap space reasons and contend at the same time, while having Hedman as our top LD and needing to improve the right side D. That Canucks deal would be a decent offer.
Cost controlled Sven, improve right D, and get a good pick.

I'd (StevieY) hope for Boeser + Tanev + pick, but that's too much as Tanev is a top 2 dman on a good contract is already sufficient, Bearcheese helps alleviate the loss points wise on LW.

Overpayment. We are dealing a top pairing RHD in his prime. He has one more good contract in him after his current one is up. We are dealing with a team that is so close to contending again. If we need to take extra cap back to help Tampa out do that. Adding Baertschi insures we can protect everyone up front we need/want to. But don't add a pick. In fact if we are helping Tampa out let them add a pick.

Nothing unusual about the price paid for Gudbranson when you factor in what other young D-men drafted in the first round cost like - Reinhart, Larsson, Hamilton, Jones, Zadarov, Shattenkirk etc

Lombardi has made some bad trades. The Kings are at the beginning of a slide due to some of Lombardis recent roster decisions. He was universally lambasted for the Bishop acquisition, a completely weird trade he made their. Made zero sense

Lombardi's best trades were prior to the teams Stanley Cups.

A young Johnson for Gleason swap.
Williams for O'sully+2nd.
then swapping Johnson+pick for a younger Jeff Carter.
bold move of schenn, Simmonds, pick for Richards back when he was Selke like.

His errors were long term contracts trying to be like the blackhawks with hossa etc.
Then like Gillis not prepping for long term success.

In any case I hope Benning keeps on with moving vets for blue chippers and picks.
Lombardi would be nice to have for the (keeping in the topic) rebuild if JB plans on targeting a younger but further developed center that can make plays.
