It was a perplexing move right from the get go. He had just come off a pretty good showing at the wjc and some of us were looking forward to watching his development then BAM...He was traded for a scrub minor league journeyman who looked like a bag of ass. Retarded move
I didn't know that Florida picked him off the waiver wire 3 years ago. Benning even had a chance to rectify his fuck up....even

There are 2 other teams that let him slide after us as well.
Some guys just take a while, were we really going to keep him around until 2020? And even then may not have been the right fit!
FLA seems to suit him. Right person, right seat!

I've wondered about that throughout the playoffs as I've followed the Panthers.
What the actual fuck happened there?
Dude is a heckuva all around player.....has a great shot too.
At the time of the trade Forsling had the value of a 5th round pick
... because that's exactly where he was drafted just 7 months prior to the trade (2014 draft).
Forsling wasn't drafted until the 5th round for a reason: He couldn't skate.
(years later he would improve his skating)
He got hot at the WJC in 2014... and then again to start this season with Linkopings.
(but just 4 points in his last 20 games)
The player he was traded for was a 22-yr-old who was drafted in the 2nd round 3 drafts before the trade.
That player (defenceman Clendening) had racked up 22 goals + 88 assists in 185 AHL games.
Canucks were racked with injuries and needed a cheap dee they could plug into the lineup immediately
... which is exactly what they did with Clendening (I think he played every game for the next 5 weeks).
As others have stated, Forsling was waived by the Canes in 2019 and again in 2021.
Any team could've had him for free in 2019 (5 years after being drafted) and every team passed.
Then, in 2021 (7 years post draft) he was waived again, this time claimed by the Cats.
Improving his skating eventually turned him into a late bloomer... who knew?

The move was prescient as within a week after the trade, injuries hit the D core and the trade provided the patchwork fix.

I have always wondered what is the best way to develop a prospect? I know it is different for each player but to me there are a few things that they should do.
1 - if the player has only played in Europe they need to get him over within 2 years of being drafted. They need to learn the big ice as quick as possible.
2 - they should look at the team that they are drafting them from to ensure there is development while in the juniors.
3 - when they do get to the AHL the team needs to have plans for them. They do need some extra coaching compared to a vet. While on the game give them some difficult shifts so they can learn.
4 - if possible give them a few games up on the big team. Nothing like seeing it firsthand to really learn.
I feel the Canucks have been doing a much better job, especially with the AHL development. For once there seems to be a connection between the pro and farm coaches and it helps they are just a drive down the road.
I know there are rules etc. about players coming from Junior to pro and again each player is different
Canucks top prospects IMO and who I expect to see on the team in the next 2-3 seasons are Lekk, Wallender and EP2. I would add Silvos to that list. There are others but most look to be 4th line with some potential for 3rd. Hopefully I’m wrong on them.

1 yes the European players sure do need to learn the big ice in North America - WTF
4 the NHL is not training wheels for prospect development and wind are too valuable to have players on the roster who are not earning their keep. That is what the AHL is for and you acknowledge that slightly in your point 2 and more fully in your point 3.

1 - I am saying bring them over sooner and let finished their development here. I see to may players picked and then they finish their version of juniors in Europe and then when they do come over they have a big adjustment year or 2 to get used to the bigger ice. Look at Filip Johansson, drafted 1st round in 2018 and stayed there until 2023/24 season. Seems like he will never make the NHL but if he came over a year after he was drafted would that have helped his development?
4 - did I say the NHL was training wheels for a player? We have all seen a player given some games when they have earned it but they are not ready for the big show yet. Hell some here even say X player has earned a few games to see what they got over the typical #13 forward or #7 or #8 defender.

1 - learning that bigger North American ice is so important for European players. Yup, sure it's. Yup LOL Idiot
4 - there has to be a need in the lineup and the player has to have earned the spot. First that need in the lineup needs to go to the the player that has been toiling away with the team in practice but during in the press box for games.
