Who else at the time?

Myers?

Miller?

EP?

Garland?

Another chess piece misplayed by Management in the Hughes game I guess but not sure their hands weren't tied.

Maybe he was the best choice assuming he would grow into it.

Another bet that didn't work out.

...or...

...assuming it would push him to stay.

Would a different captain have made a difference in the Miller - EP fiasco I wonder.

People were more than happy with QH as the new captain at the time. Let's not let feelings get in the way of facts.

Hatred towards Miller was fanned by the media the very first day that trade was made. In reality, his low EQ just doesn't make a good captain... not necessarily on the ice or even in the room, but in front of media.

EP? Pfftt... people breathed a sign of relief he wasn't chosen. He himself very unsubtley declined. Thank gawd.

Myers probably had the best personality and respect of the room to be captain, but the "fans" would have thrown their Karen selves in front of the skytrain. Cuz would have strangled his chicken repeatedly until his doctor put his peepee on permanent LTIR.

Right 5th.

So many unknowns with this clusterfuck of an organization.

Really we could question so many things that have happened and relate them directly to inferior management.

Edit....yeah Hank...not sure there was another choice.

Zadorov.

Talking about people who completely quit on the team, no one split faster than Tocchet.

He basically head hunted Foote to be his #2. Tocc wins coach of the year with an impressive playoff run in their first full year, only to leave Foote et al in the dust to clean up the mess a year later.

Douche move if there ever was one.

Fair...but back to my question above...how bad did our Managerial Monkeys fuck shit up to the point where Ricky was basically running for his life....

Good take, BoS.

Amazing that Tocchet is completely unscathed after the shit hit the fan and splattered over everyone in the organization. Never forget, not only did he sneak out the back door, he also sneaked in through that same back door.

donlever wrote: Sun Mar 15, 2026 9:19 am Yeah...I'm somewhat surprised these players get chastised for operating to the best of their benefit within the system created by ownership, management and league power brokers.

Do the players partake in CBA's, yeah sure, but let's be real about who holds the ultimate hammer.

Players presented with system.

Players work within system to maximize their income and ability to win.

Fans get butt hurt.

The cycle continues.
I don't chastise him for utilizing the system to his advantage, not at all. I also recognize that he did everything fully within his rights, and even did us a solid by letting us know well ahead of time so we could maximize the return. I also acknowledge he is one of, if not, the best all time Canucks.

I get butt hurt because he quit on Vancouver, he wanted out, he is a traitor to the cause, he wanted to go South. Respect and disdain are not mutually exclusive.
What did he have to stay for? Management had hired the team and screwed up every decision they made. The coach wouldn't even stay around for these clowns.

Then at the trade deadline the vets were lining up like trays fleeing a sinking ship dropping lines that they'd be happy to move on.

I don't blame anyone for not wanting to work for these fuckers.

After Bo, Bruce, JT, everyone has seen enough of how the assholes treat their players.

Fuck them

Do you say the same of Hank?

Hughes was the locker room and coaches #1 choice. Ricky was was the biggest proponent of Quinn for captain.

Mëds wrote: Sat Mar 14, 2026 6:11 pm He presided? LMAO!!!

The implosion happened because of Miller and Petey.

Quinn reached out to Petey and tried to make efforts only to be rebuffed. What was he supposed to do? Nobody, neither coaches or players, have made any real headway with the Alien. To expect Hughes to magically do so is ridiculous.

Miller was a hot-head. But other than attempt to redirect him with conversation, what can a fellow player do? Nothing. Miller asked out and left.

I’ll give you the Demko argument tho. As captain, Hughes should have used his healing powers to fix Demko’s physical fragility, and if failing to do that he should have suited up in net between shifts on the blueline in order to spell Demko for brief prophylactic intervals. And when those didn’t happen he should have performed the surgical repairs in the medical room in the bowels of Rogers Arena, overseen all of Demko’s rehab, and consulted on any follow-up assessments.
Yeah, when you're the leader you own it; it's on you. If Quit didn't want that responsibility, that's on him; he took up the 'C'. Leaders manage the room - and all the personalities within it. They understand who needs what kind of encouragement and has the intestinal fortitude/force of personality to effectively apply it. We don't know exactly what went on in that room, but the results speak as much to Quit's leadership as any other aspect of the downfall of this core.

You can rightly question whether management should have offered him the captaincy; Hughes took it, so he has his fingerprints on this mess for his lack of leadership as team captain. He knew Petey and Miller as well, if not better, than management or coaches going into it. He knew as well as anyone, the backstory and ongoing tensions in that relationship - and he still took the captaincy. He either a) overestimated his ability to manage that relationship (like everyone else in the building); b) had just as much cluelessness as management as to the potential for those two to implode and what that would do to the team; or c) he was planning on splitting town at the first opportunity regardless what they put on his jersey.

We rightly shit on Messier for his role as captain during the dark years in the late 90s, but Saint Quit was helpless to do anything about this mess??

Hughes taking the C makes the difference between him and, say, Bure or Kesler. Stars have left here because of managerial malpractice or they want to jump sinking ship. Happens to every team over time.

Captains don't. Not in Vancouver, at least. You can blame it on the examples set by the likes of Linden, Smyl or the Sedins, but there's an expectation of investment in the organization and the city. You can call it fan toxicity, but that's the flip-side of a fan-base that - when things are good - is something former players still remark at.

Sorry, as soon as Hughes took the C he stopped being a bystander in that mess - regardless how impossible the mess was.

This is also true. He is also in the "Dead To Me" category of former Canucks. It really is to wonder how much Tocchet and Hughes talked about the Good Ship Canuck before Tocchet flew the coop. As much as anyone - and probably more - Tocchet deserves blame for the implosion of that core.

Just as Moore couldn't have broken his spine when hit by Bert because he didn't have a spine to break, Quin had no team to leave behind.
