It's getting warm

The primary goal of this site is to provide mature, meaningful discussion about the Vancouver Canucks. However, we all need a break some time so this forum is basically for anything off-topic, off the wall, or to just get something off your chest! This forum is named after poster Creeper, who passed away in July of 2011 and was a long time member of the Canucks message board community.

Why haven't vegetable gardens and home greenhouses become a more viable alternative? When we were kids everyone had one but there are hardly any now. Why?

It seems to me it would be a fantastic idea ya? I grow quite a bit in my ghetto greenhouse these days. Everything from broccoli to lettuce...its actually pretty fuckin easy.
Because we are too lazy and easier to buy in a store plus both parents are working.

The major advantage of electric highways is of course that emissions disappear almost entirely. Additionally, both energy consumption and maintenance costs are significantly lower than with combustion engines. The efficiency of electric power is 77 per cent, which is high compared to a diesel engine, while energy consumption is about a fifth of diesel and petrol.

So, sure. Some versions of electric driving might call for investments in infrastructure, but basically, this just means the trucks can charge their batteries while driving and won't need a pit stop.

And if savings on fuel are in the range of 80%, there's certainly an incentive to invest. :)

And yeah, it makes sense. My Mitsubishi Outlander only needs 2 kWh/10 kms, which cost me roughly USD 0.20, when driving on electricity, but once the battery runs out, I need almost a litre of gasoline for the same 10 kms, which costs roughly USD 1.50, so for me the cost of driving on electricity is less than 15% of the cost of driving on regular gas.... :o

Yet another reason why relying on electric is better.... :look:
On September 14th drones and missiles launched by the group struck the Abqaiq plant and Khurais oil field, starting huge fires. Saudi Aramco, the kingdom’s state-owned oil company, said that it had suspended production of 5.7m barrels of crude oil. That is equivalent to roughly 60% of the kingdom’s output and 6% of the world’s oil production. The price of Brent crude, the international benchmark, rose by more than 10% in the early hours of trading on September 16th. Some analysts expect oil prices to spike further if Saudi oil production is not restored soon.

Progress! :rockin:
Coal generation in the EU collapsed by 19% in the first half of this year, with falls in almost every coal-burning country.

Half of coal’s fall was replaced by wind and solar, and half was replaced by switching to fossil gas. If this continues for the rest of the year it will reduce CO2 emissions by 65 million tonnes compared to last year, and reduce EU’s GHG by 1.5%. Coal generation already had fallen 30% from 2012 to 2018.

Meanwhile the BC commie/green coalition government pushes residences and businesses to switch from gas to electrical power not acknowledging that much of our electrical power comes from coal generating plants in Alberta. The bulk of BC's hydro power is exported to the US.

It's hard to say anything is good or bad for earth, unless you're some sort of gaya-worshipping hippie, but major changes in climate are usually not very good for any species alive, as it forces them to instantly adjust to new circumstances.

Sure, in the long run some come out winners, like eg the mammals when (most of) the dinosaurs were killed off by that meteorite that hit the Mexican Gulf. But the mammals that were alive when that happened of course suffered too. Just that they did not become extinct, and in the absense of dinosaurs, their offspring could eventually rule the planet.

The last time the earth heated up as much as it seems to be doing now, it took roughly 100,000 years to reach the same CO2 levels that we now seem to be accomplishing in a century or two. It's not the end of the earth, but it may cause lots of species to go extinct, unless they can migrate to new areas better suited for their needs. It will be the hardest, I guess for aectic animals.

We're already seeing the arctic fox having severe problems, because as the climate gets warmer, the common red fox keeps expanding its territory higher and higher up into the mountain regions, and they are roughly twice as big as arctic foxes, that either are driven away or killed by their bigger cousins. There was a really good lemming year last summer, so after the population had shrunk for several years, they bounced back a bit, but it's only a matter of time. As more and more red foxes move into the mountain range, the arctic foxes are doomed. Their only competitive advantage is that they can handle a colder climate than the red fox, and as the winters keep getting milder, that will count for nothing in the long run.

Maybe the one in the article was scouting for new territories where to escape from the red foxes?
