Defenseman Nikita Tryamkin’s season ended today in the KHL playoffs, his 3 year contract in the KHL ends on April 30th.
The #Canucks can now start talking contract with his agent Todd Diamond.
Tryamkin can not play this season.

Ok. Time to play hardball with Tryamkin. If he wants to play in the NHL he has to prove it. 2 year deal for $1 million per. Let him earn his money.

Sadly, I think we need him more than he needs us. How long do we have his rights for?

Unsigned? Til July 1 2022.
So we will sign him to either a 1-year show-me contract and re-sign in a year
... or we sign him to a 3+ year deal this off-season.
I prefer the latter, hopefully keeping his cap-hit lower over that time frame.

Not a huge fan of Finnish hockey players in general, they are a peculiar breed,
you wish they were all like Sami Salo. Totally different than the Swedes.
Remember
Sami Salo didn't start his NHL career till he was 24 with the Sens, & not every prospect bursts out of the gates like Petey and Hughes, some take time.
The only issue with Juolevi is he has Salo luck lol, just going through injuries every year.
And our other best
Finnish player dman was
Jyrki Lumme, and he didn't play his first 80+ game NHL season till he was
25. He also had a knee injury with the Habs way back when, but got healthy and had a long superb career.
The Sens and Habs gave up on Salo + Lumme too quick, for Salo (Schaefer) and Lumme (2nd rounder Craig Darby [who bounced back and forth to the AHL).
With that said, I say just relax on 21 yr old Juolevi, he'll be ok in time, he fits the teams systems of a puck possession team and OJ has a great pass, can setup players with superb vision and playmaking ability....Also he won't be needing a big 2nd contract, which saves on cap space down the road. Additionally his value isn't high as it is thanks to injuries, so sit tight and thank the gods Hughes is here to distract you - while OJ continues to develop into a future top 4 dman, cost controlled and likely plays superb NHL hockey 24-25 yrs of age till late 30's, get a good 8-10 years of awesome hockey in him at least.
Good response.
Everyone develops at a different pace. My only concern is that with the game trending younger, we won't see that "late 30's workhorse defender" as much anymore. Might shorten Joulevi's playing window, if he ever makes the show...
I was thinking something similar - you cannot compare the league when Salo entered to today. Not to say anyone is a bust but if you are not in the NHL by the time you are 22ish then you probably not be a top 6 forward or a top 3 defender. The league has changed a lot and it also means that GMs should no longer pay a UFA until he is mid 30's unless it is a cheap deal or the UFA's name is Crosby.
Actually Reef, I was thinking he will probably peak as a #3 defender, but that's still ok

Harvard's hockey season is over.
The #Canucks can talk with D Jack Rathbone about signing.
Will be interesting to see how the season over effects Rathbone's thought process.

So stay for another year in college or get her going on the farm.

I think he should stay another year. He has had a good season. But I think he can develop more. He is also close to home and may not want to leave his brother yet. Which maybe why Canucks may want him to sign now too, together it over with or find out if he will sign with them.

Sign the kid. We have contract room, and while it is rare, I always fear NCAA kids going the free agency route. Yep. My Bettman conspiracy theory is still going.

Assuming the season is in the can, what are the odds Quinn takes the Calder?
Even though its been presented as a two-horse race, I'm a little surprised the Chicago media machine hasn't been hyping Kubalik more - he's got a good shot to hit 35 goals, and an outside chance to hit 40.
Quinn's got the edge in TOI and points, Makar's got the edge in plus/minus and P/GP. Its so even, I wonder if it comes down to Quinn having the age-edge, being a year younger than Makar.
Of course that little fucker Makar gets 3 points in the last game before the shutdown

Why is HW a hard ass on rookies? She always wants them to cook in the minors, college or junior for decades

As nice as Utica is in wintertime I have a hunch that Boner will be heading back to Harvard for another season of high end book learnin' and some NCAA hockey on the side.
It's just a hunch, mind you. I could be wrong.
