Good move for both teams, for very different reasons.
Carolina gets a good, high potential, young centre plus a 3rd/4th line role player to play a hard game, or they can still buy him out and absorb his cap hit easily.
Chicago gets cap relief, two picks to replenish the cupboards, a little potential expansion draft protection, for a team still very much contending. The Hawks still have a lot of work to do to get everyone under contract. They need to create depth on D. I can see them making more room as the summer goes on.
On rumour floating around is that Chicago is on Malkin's trade list. Although I can't see the Hawks absorbing his cap yet, could they make room? Would they want to make room for him?

Difficult to see how the Hawks could do it.
Not that I've heard anything and not that I know Malkin's list but it seems to me, for a bunch of reasons, the natural place for him to go would be Detroit....

You'd have to ditch one of Kane or Toews. No way you can have $30M tied up in 3 players.

It would be nearly criminal to do so after the season he just had.

General Fanager shows a huge savings on cap space for the buyout. Wtf? We save $1 million if we buyout burrows, and they save $3 million. Are we structuring our contracts wrong??

Since he's under 26 his buyout is only 1/3 of the contract value. Anyone over 26 has to cough up 2/3rds. Cowen was due $4.5M this year. So his buyout cost is only $1.5M, spread over twice the term remaining on the deal ($750K per).
