In Sweden each polling station is set up to serve between 1000 and 2000 voters (albeit in some rural districts they fail to reach the 1000 guideline), and they are open from 8 am till 9 pm. Also, when you close the polling station you first have to check outside if there is anyone there who wants to exercise their right to vote. If there is, you should let them in and let them cast their vote before you close. Also, we hold all our elections on Sundays, when most people don't work.

Despite this roughly 40% preferred to vote by mail in the last elections, and of course that makes it even easier to fit into a busy schedule.

The main objective in a democracy should be to make it as easy as possible for people to exercise their right to vote.

One single polling station for 661,000 people? On a Tuesday? Shutting the door at 6 pm, despite long lines of people wanting to get in?
