...and Bob the goalie to Leaves @ 3x7.
I don't understand the Leaves. Bob is 40. He was terrible last year. There might be a correlation.
Explaining further for those less in touch with their team.
They just traded Woll with 6-7 D man Benoit (that's where he fits in the lineup, not his height). He's been of questionable health, but has generally performed well outside of the "mailing it in" period of last season. Of average starter quality, but injuries require a decent back up or better yet, a rotation. Which they have -- Stolarz.
They got a third pairing D in the deal with potential 4-5 or (long shot top 4) upside (and press box downside), a third, and what looked like the emergency goalie you could stash in the AHL (but the Senators gave up a 5th for). So you can look at it like Woll and a stay at home third pairing D with no upside for a puck moving third pairing D with a little upside, a 3rd, and a 5th.
Now the obvious reason for the move wasn't that Woll had a bad month. It was that Hildeby is a year younger and played pretty well. His numbers had him among the better goalies in the league, and while that's not an immediate expectation, its reasonable to think he'd provide similar-to-Woll quality and has the potential for more. A tandem of the present, a starter of the future.
By bringing in Bob, they add $7M to their cap (and twice what Woll was making) for an expected performance that's really not likely (IMO) to be the best of Bob. Could be, but its really not that likely. Signing a surer thing goalie ends when that goalie is 40.
So they've got the log jam again. And not obviously better goaltending.
I assume Stolarz is getting moved. And that will make it make sense?
