Maybe in America. There it has deteriorated to a point where people don’t just have different opinions, but alternative facts.

In most of the world we still think there is a difference between facts and lies.
And most media outlets like to stick to the facts. Sure, every media outlet has a bias, one way or another, so they may interpret the facts slightly differently, but they still try to base their reporting on facts. Journalists who lie tend to get fired.

Throughout the Cold War, the US always tried to claim moral superiority to the Soviet Union.
The Soviets always scoffed at this and would counter any criticism of their human rights violations or breaches of international law with a ”well, what about...” trying to divert attention to some other matter.

The basic idea of whataboutism is to muddy the waters, so that there are no absolutes. Nothing is right or wrong, nothing is true or false.

This good ole Soviet propaganda tool has made a comeback under former KGB colonel Putin, and he has been pushing it not only through sites like Sputnik or RT, but also through various obscure alt right channels. And it seems to be spreading. Especially in the USA people no longer agree on what is true, which is devastating for a society. As long as you agree on the basics, you can have a civil discourse over your political disagreements, but when both sides are convinced the opponents are corrupt liars, society starts to disintegrate.

The Russians have long tried to achieve this kind of discord in the USA and Western Europe, and judging from your recent comments, it seems they are starting to succeed.

Yeah, As I've stated before, if you believe in the concept of rule of law, it is absolutely fundamental that government officials do not intervene in court cases. That ruins the whole concept of an independent judiciary and is the first step on a slippery slope toward dictatorship.
