CHL players can't play in the AHL until they are 20 years old (by December 31st).
When did they start that rule?
IIRC, it’s either this, or if the player has played four (full) seasons in the CHL. I assume Woo was only a call up in 15-16 (7 GP) so that year would not qualify.

When a player's CHL season ends, they are allowed to join an AHL club on an amateur tryout contract for the remainder of that AHL season. But when the next season begins, the player's options fall back to the NHL or CHL if he's under 20.

Thanks Micky. That must be what the Canucks are contemplating. Will it help Woo's development to get into a few games, maybe playoffs. As well Utica needs help on D if they want a shot. With Hughes in the lineup they should be sending Brisebois back if he's not hurt. Sautner would need to clear so they may not want to risk sending him down at this point. As far as Im concerned they should send poopalot down.

Yes, 4 games in the now defunct CHL (Central Professional Hockey League).

And your point is?
I’m curious if he was the last man to do that.
Weird, I wonder if that was some offshoot of the WHA? Since Messier was a WHA pick/player, maybe the AHL rule didn't apply?

Yeah I have no idea. Gretzky and Messier played in the WHA as 17 year olds which is amazing. Coilers ended up with both of them. I was being a smart ass regarding the AHL rule. Some people were not quite grasping that

The WHA is my nemesis. I hate them. I would not listen to their offers. I was loyal. I fucked up. Ancient history, but;

Ha! Just proves the Oilers cheated, in essence, for all their cups. 99 and 11 never went to draft. It's a cheat. And here they are, today,
even with all the top picks, year after year after year, Tanking. If there was hockey blasphemy, they are it.

For clarity... we're talking about the Central Professional Hockey League (CHL).

The agreement mentioned is with the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) and the NHL.

The Central Professional Hockey League launched in 1963.

When the WHA folded in 1979, most of those teams joined NHL.

But the Cincinnati Stingers for whom Messier played was absorbed into the Central Professional Hockey League.

(along with the Birmingham Bulls)

A lot of confusion out their cuz the Central Professional Hockey League and the Canadian Hockey League are both called CHL.

A few interesting FA on the team though.
Rathbone sure is flying under the radar, he had an excellent rookie season in college - 6 goals and 13 assists for 19 points in 28 games finished the season strong putting up points in 6 of his last 7 games - 2 goals 4 assists. A plus 9, excellent and can fire the puck. Has put on size in his college year and is now 5’-11” 190 lbs, will end up over 200 lbs, a very stocky kid. Coach Donato raves about Rathbone putting him in the same category as teammates - Adam Fox and Reilly Walsh

Great pick Benning!

Great pick Benning!

He has tons of character too. Stayed close to home for one more year to be with his younger brother who is on the autism spectrum. A good prospect.
