I don't disagree with you regarding the part of your post that I clipped. We have heard (from Rutherford iirc) that Miller did try to figure it out and work through the situation. What we have never heard, until some of what filtered out of the season ticket holders meeting, was anything regard to Pettersson outside of his unsatisfactory preparation (off-season presumably).

Please give an example of a failing player who received a max term contract that gobbled up more than 12% of the team's salary cap.

Please give an example of a player who received such a contract despite 6 years of inadequate preparation.

Please give an example of a player who has received such a contract despite NOT being a leader.

The issue is not just EP's failures, the issue is the failures coupled with the commitment from management/ownership. I would say it is very uncommon for a player to fail the way EP has AND receive the contract and commitment that he did.

I don't want to defend management in the EP40 signing -- I was surprised by the number, not surprised by the fact of the signing, and unaware that there were take-it-real-serious offers on the table. But I will provide an answer to the questions best I can....

(1) EP40 was not a failing player when he signed the contract. He had come off a 103 point season and was pacing for about 95 points when he inked the deal. Seems to me that turning into a pumpkin coordinated with two events -- trading Kuzmenko and signing the contract.

(2) I don't know enough about other players' preparedness to know if EP40 stands alone; I also don't know that it was a consistent 6 year thing. But if a guy can be underprepared and half ass a 100 point season, room for growth, no? (That's one side; the other is that if the guy is seeking a max pay day yet not putting 100% into things before the contract is signed, then what do you expect after the money is guaranteed?)

(3) I think nearly every player that underperforms a big contract falls into the category of "not a leader" because when they perform, they "lead by example." And the same would have been said of EP40 if he consistently was north of 90 points.

What is interesting with Petey, is how far back dated it’s been (4 years) with certain teammates being frustrated with his commitment level or lack thereof. Obviously management had been aware of this, long before gifting him $11.6 million per. Rutherford is a salty character, been around the block you know, he obviously must’ve seen the potential dangers of signing a player to such heft with the “room” reputation Petey was building in the eyes of his teammates. This is why I strongly believe the Aqualini’s played a big factor in choosing Petey, paying Petey, hence the timing of Paolo’s exit. It’s all way too weird. The criticisms coming from management over Petey’s commitment level has really ramped up lately since Paolo’s exit.

This is a reach man.

His exit is more likely to do with something like him being sued for 641K by a Capital Corp. for a failed 21M dollar real-estate deal in LA. Shady business is always the reason for these things. Not pouty players who are paid too much.

First noted in the classic novel Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad in which the movie is loosely based on. Different premise, one takes place in Africa (Heart of Darkness) and one takes place in Vietnam (Apocalypse Now). To be truthful, I tried reading Heart of Darkness but gave up. A dry as fuck read but some literary weirdos think it’s brilliant, but this is coming from a guy (Chef) who pee’d his pants multiple times reading Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. I also adore the vulgar of Charles Bukowski “whom” Doc considers to be a heathen of the worse kind, Chef on the other hand loves Chucky Bukowski, reminds me of the angry drunks who ran tabs and cashed cheques at my old man’s bar.
