Here is the thing Dude. They are asking Jake to do the same thing they asked Bo to do. Develop a reliable two way game, learn to play away from the puck, don't worry about the offence yet. If you learn to do those other things your skill will break through on the offensive side. Big difference, Bo was able to do it at the NHL level. By all accounts Jake is learning to do it now in the AHL.

Another big thing, they assessed his off ice habits and lifestyle choices as poor. Same thing they did with Trymakin. Trymakin bought into a plan and has been working it and it shows. Jake never seemed to buy in, until recently, and he is trying to make the adjustments.

The reports on Jake have all been positive with him doing what they want. His hockey IQ coupled with his cockiness and sense of entitlement have been what has plagued him. If he is getting it, if he is on board and working his tail off to correct both his off ice deficiencies and on ice awareness, then that is positive. He may never be that top line power forward Benning drafted him to be but he could be that top nine power forward that we so badly need in our future. Don't quit on him yet Dude.

I decided to purchase an AHL Live Package of games to watch the kids and form my own opinion as to their progress..

After watching the first game, the 3 players who I thought would play in the NHL in the next few seasons were Virtanen, Cassels and McEneny...

That was a number of games ago, and since then I feel stronger about Virtanen's and McEneny's chances and still think Cassels will see the NHL maybe as soon as a game or two starting next season or the year after....

I'm not overly concerned about a players production at this point in their careers, I focus on their god given skill sets and my opinions are based on if I think they translate into the NHL game...

With Virtanen for me its obvious, he skates as good if not better than any other player I've seen watching the games and his power reminds me of an over ager going up against a 16 year old in junior hockey...

His lack of production I think is more due to the fact that the Comets are not a very skilled team and his teammates have a difficult time playing at the speed that Virtanen can...The result is Virtanen is forced to play a more static game, that won't be a problem at the NHL level....

Cassels is the player who surprised me the most, for all of the hand wringing in Nuck land over his struggles in the beginning, what I've seen is a player who Coach Green trusts in key situations and plays a very mature game....

He plays shut down minutes and takes key face-offs in the defensive zone...

McEney made some very subtle plays while watching him that first game that stood out for me and since then he has gone on a bit of a scoring streak....

While Subban got the All Star selection, I think McEney's game is far superior to his...

I've read a few reports on Cassels and Virtanen's last few games and both seem to be coming along, especially Cassels. Apparently Jake looked very good in the last games, not on the scoreboard, but in the areas where he gets most criticized, like he's moving his feet more, hustling and not just being an audience member on the ice. It's good to hear that these two are starting to show some promise. Not concerned about Jake's point stats, it's his play away from the puck and decision making which apparently is looking very good recently. I kind of anticipated for the type of player that Cassels has to be to succeed that it would take him a while to adjust to the pro game.

Exactly - I don't give a shit how many points he (or any other player) gets in the A. He was sent there to improve his game, buy into a system and get prepped for an NHL career.
