He missed the playoffs that 7th year when he was just coach and that Ferguson Jr guy took over as GM; Quinn was dismissed. After Quinn's departure from TO, the Leaves only made the playoffs once in like 8 years.
In fairness, there was no cap during Quinn's years and they were top 5 in payroll.
In fairness, all teams were playing by the same rules.

Yes the Clarkson contract was stupid, but there is more.

The Robidas contract was stupid as well (stick a fork in him).

The Kessel + Phaneuf + Reimer + Gardiner extensions were also pretty bad.

- Kessel is a C A N C E R as explained earlier, but certain teams desperate for goalscoring would have paid big.

- Phaneuf should have been traded (bad captain and he wanted too much money to re-sign)

- Reimer should have been dumped (he hates Carlyle + asked to be traded, lots of cheaper backups available)

- Gardiner is not a $4M defenseman (and would lose to David Booth in a battle of wits).

Nonis let Grabovski, Kulemin, MacArthur, Bolland, and McClement walk. Image

Nonis traded Gunnarsson for Polak, which was dumb in & of itself

... but he threw in a 4th rounder for good measure and retained salary! Image

The Kontiola, Frattin, and Booth signings that were supposed to give them superior depth

... didn't.

Nonis kept Carlyle in place (dumb!) (actually extended his contract!!) yet fired Carlyle's assistant coaches.

I fucking love Dave Nonis!

The best contract was for Jeff Finger $3.25M.

Is Ferguson the most incendiary
Over the Internet, you can pretend to be anyone or anything.

I'm amazed that so many people choose to be complete twats.

After that signing took place, many speculated that Fletcher and Wilson had actually confused Finger for Kurt Sauer, who was their intended target.
Ron Wilson wrote:I'm not BS-ing. He was the most improved defencemen at the end of the year in the Western Conference.
Cliff Fletcher wrote:A lot of people in Toronto are asking me, 'Who the hell is Jeff Finger?' simply because they haven't seen him play.
Even after seeing him play, I think most people in Toronto were still asking that question.

There were a few articles on the subject (Topper just linked one), and the stats pointed to Sauer apparently. I got my quotes from the Hockey Buzz article. You can find at least three different articles on the subject if you search around.

For those that don't know, he was demoted to the AHL 1.5 seasons into the contract and never heard from again.

I also remember distinctly being at the draft in GM Place when the Rask / Raycroft trade was announced and laughing my ass off. I don't think anyone thought that was a good trade at the time. Probably the highlight of the 2006 Entry Draft for me. Thank you Toronto for providing me with entertainment, because god knows the Canucks weren't drafting anyone worth while.

How the hell does a GM, the scouts, and the coach, screw up that badly?

How was there not at least one person in the Maple Laughs organization that picked up on the fact that Finger was not Sauer?

What a complete shit show of an organization!

Have you been to Cleveland?
Or Buffalo?

Toronto is one of the cleanest, safest big cities you'll find anywhere.
I take that you have never travelled outside of Toronto... That explains why okcanuck feels that...

So using geo-anatomy we have TO as the asshole, Buffalo the taint and Cleveland as the hairy ball-sack of NA.

And that peeps is how you crop this shit!
