The team was one of the highest scoring in the league before Boeser was injured and Benning traded for Toffoli, so they really don’t have to add anyone up front now that Brock is healthy again. Neither Tanev nor Stecher were big drivers of the offence. So not much should have changed offensively. If they add Toffoli now or another scoring forward cheap, it’s just another round in the chamber. Not really necessary, but good to have. With Hoglander and Podkolzin pushing, signing a forward might not be needed at all.
The Canucks goalie Tandem may be as good as last season with Demko coming into his own, no real concerns there. But I still like the idea of signing a cheep contract with Cory Schneider to play with DiPietro in Utica as an injury call-up. I don’t think anyone will sign him to be a backup at the NHL level because of his injury history even though he looked close to his old self before Covid cancelled the season.
The left side of the D should be fine with Rathbone and Juolevi fighting it out for the bottom pairing. The only concern the team has is the right side D. Myers is one of the top four. The bottom right side should be adequately filled by one of Benn, Chatfield or Rafferty. So the only thing the Canucks really need is one top four right side D. Right now the in house option would be to try Rafferty in that slot. Paired with Edler, he might do. Craig Button was just recapping the prospects and said Rafferty is NHL ready. They could resign Stecher and pair him with Edler again. This does not improve the team’s size any, but as a place holder until improvements can be found, he would be a cheap option. Pietrangelo seems like a pipe dream to me. The Canucks have about four million in useable cap space now. They can make the offer for Pietrangelo up to ten million if they are willing to pay the price to make Eriksson’s six million disappear. They can try but I just don’t see it happening.
I don’t think the team looks too bad. There are still a couple months before the season starts and the Canucks only need to fill one spot. Benning said in his press conference this might be a long process, but there were teams that wanted to make trades because they don’t have money to sign FAs. Maybe Benning shouldn’t sign a UFA and use his four million to take a contract of an appropriate Dman from a cash strapped team. Lots of options are still on the table. Whoever is joining the Urine Crew at this point needs to get a diaper.
