I think trading for a guy who was guaranteed to be on IR the rest of the season only sweetened the pot in Buffalo.

Assistance is now legal.

what would the cost have been Edler, Horvat, Virtanen, Gaunce and a 1st .....LOL
Yeah, that trade is gross from Buffalo's perspective.

The Canucks are on the right track. Things very well may get worse before they get better, but we getting younger and slowly acquiring more quality young players.

This has to be the only reason they over-payed by a prospect and a 1st.

The 1st overall guarantee!

I admit that is probably exagerated (I'm not comparing Edler to Meyers), my thinking was No1 D, younger former 1st forward, top prospect, role prospect with potential and a 1st.

Buffalo's return is 3-4 years down the road if they can cultivate the talent better they have been doing. They may need a coach to circle the wagons.

Maybe more like:
Bogosian, Kane and Kasdorf for our 2015 First, Tanev (though I'd take Tanev over Myers any day), Hansen, Jensen and Shink/Gaunce/McCann.

Either way, it would have gutted our already thin pool of prospects. If Kane didn't pan out as a top 6 force, it would have put us back three drafts.

Pretty much it. Buffalo had the assets to make that deal. They didn't even do bad, imo. They keep the best 2 1st rounders they have for this years draft (Hi McEichel), they don't trade any of their best prospects (Reinhart, Ristoleinen, Zadorov, Girgensons, Grigorenko etc.) They can still flip Kane at the draft, and Bogosian-Myers have similar value. If Myers figures it out in Winnipeg it's a different story, but there is risk for both sides.

Winnipeg does well to get a body to play out the season in Kane's spot (Stafford - basically a UFA rental), a couple of prospects (Armia, Lemieux) who may or may not pan out, and a late 1st rounder. Not a bad value for Kane but nothing really "blue chip". Myers is the big X-factor. If he puts it together in the Peg they are set for a long, long time.

The Canucks never had the assets to reasonably make such a trade. But at the end of the day, it's certainly not the same value as the Virtanen+Horvat garbage being bandied about.

Agreed IN. Buffalo had the assets to make that deal.

Buffalo has 3 firsts and 2 seconds in the 2015 draft and a boat load of prospects I don't think there is a team in the league that can compete with their chips

Really glad that Benning didn't get all stupid like. We need to keep stock piling the prospect pool as we are still rather thin there. Keep on staying the course

Benning is no Gillis. He has a longer term plan. The short term plan is to get the fickle fans to keep supporting the team during the reboot.

I'm trying to think of all our previous trades...

Linden --> Bertuzzi/McCabe
Bure --> Jovanovski
Mogilny --> Morrison
McCabe --> H. Sedin
Bertuzzi --> Luongo
Schneider --> Horvat

Luongo --> Matthias?
Kesler --> Bonino?

The other alternative is to hope for a Stojanov for Naslund situation.

Today's deal is an interesting deal, but who knows how it will play out.
watchu talkin' bout willis... Matthias is the mighty Bruin killer...

:D

ha anyways this offseason I'd deal off a few aging vets to cut cap and bring in the young guns like we've been saying oh a few years now, but at least now thanks to our drafting we actually got bonafide prospects who can play.

With some daft trading of two of Higgins, Hansen or Burrows we could probably land a good solid defensive dman. Plus with the solid play of Kenins and the new addition of McMillan - Higgins and Hansen should be made available for picks or prospects or a dman this deadline.
