They make the Canucks look like a youth movement. That's not a veteran team, it's a seniors centre. They are nearly 2 years older, on average, than any other team (NJ is 30.44 years, Nashville is next at 28.6... Vancouver is 4th at 28.5). Their best player is less than 2 years younger than our President of Hockey Ops...

At least he'll get an extended vacation and keep collecting cheques. Merry Christmas, here's free money.

And just looking at the numbers, we're not that far out of whack with a good chunk of the league. You'll notice the Devils, however, are clearly much older than the rest. I do think it can be an overrated measurement (average age) of a teams chances of success, but it's hard to argue when a team like Jersey is a solid 2 years older (on average) than any other NHL team. Their average forward is 6 years older than the Average forward on Columbus (31.4 vs 25.5) .

I just now added the listed ages of the Canucks 637 and divided by 23 = 27.7 - so not as exact as QH but...

... for fun, subtract 33-year-old Burr from the roster and replace with 21-year-old Jensen...

So now it's 625 divided by 23 = 27.2 = younger than average team.

I like that QH does a weighted average as well.

Weighted by the number of games each player has played.

You would think it wouldn't be much to weight it by number of minutes played, but oh well.

In any event, you're right of course about the Devs being ridiculously old.

Subtract 28-year-old Schneider and replace him with 19-year-old Horvat = still ridiculously old.

Yeah that graph really does show out out of line they are compared to the rest of the league.

Speaking of veteran, declining players, Derek Roy was placed on waivers by the Predators today. Dude's only 31 (he'd be a young pup on the Devils), but has just 1 goal (10 points) in 26 games on the season.

And the Oilers traded for him lol for centre Mark Arcobello.

They put Pinz on waivers and claimed Fraser.

Rather than claim Roy on waivers, they traded for him. Go figure!

Roy should really help turn things around. My guess is they send Draisaitl back down to juniors after the WJCs (why in the world would they want Leon to lead Germany, after all?).

Arcobello was their 3rd highest goal scorer. From what I recall of his games vs Vancouver, he was one of the more responsible kids they had.

Why would they do that?

Some speculation that they wanted to shed a contract, or that some of Roy's salary ($1M lol) was retained. I find it real tough to believe they couldn't have gotten a 5th-7th round pick for Arcobello. At 26, it seems like he's still got something to give.

On the plus side for the Oilers, Roy weighs more than Arcobello, so they can actually claim to be getting bigger (just not taller) by acquiring Derek Roy.
