It's a good approach in baseball, but hockey as far too many variables.....and it really only works if you can spend to the max. The teams that won using that approach actually were well over the "cap" and paying luxury taxes thanks to deep pocketed owners. Can't go over like that in the NHL.
Fine, would you like it better if I be a little more specific and say that we should get supporting players that out-perform their cap hit?
This is what I get for my attempt at brevity, I guess.
I'm thinking that Elmer is confident in a few of the guys in the system like Lind, Gadjovich, Rathbone, Woo, and Pod. He might even be confident that Tree will comeback after next season and replace a departing Edler. In the NHL it is very rare to get players that outperform their cap hit anywhere but in the draft. Free agents always cost too much (see Roussel and Beagle), and in a trade it's super rare to get what we did out of JT Miller this season.

For what it's worth: Told the Coyotes / Canucks talks have been happening for at least a couple of weeks, not days. This has been a long complicated process. And while the Bruins are on OEL list, make no mistake, Vancouver is his #1 preferred destination.

Two days ago, I thought it was just some local hyperbole running rampant. Guess not. Certainly splashy. Scary as hell. He can throw some
big hits but he's taken plenty himself too; recently.
So; No Stecher, no Fantenberg, don't see how Tanev gets inked if OEL is signed. Juolevi is part of the rumored trade. Benn has a year left
but he sucks and can't keep up to today's game. I personally don't think Rafferty can play regular, full-time NHL minutes. Myers would absolutely
have to stay healthy, same with Edler.

Not really a believer in Russian Trees making a reappearance in the future but who knows.

Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if as soon as the 2020-21 playoffs there is vaccine available to the masses and full arenas.
I wouldn't be surprised if there was an abbreviated, semi-bubble season commencing in late spring and summer and perhaps even no 2020/21 season with play restarting next year at this time.
Committing to another seven years at $8.25 million per to an already 29 year old player in the best of times is risky. It's really not too bright under these unprecedented circumstances.

OEL-Larsson
Hughes-Tanev
Edler-Myers
Go for it all next season, edler/larsson UFA's after that, lose someone to Seattle, petey/hughes get their 2nd contracts.
Retool a bit accommodate those bigger contracts.

Saw on Twitter this morning that Friedman reported that OEL refused Arizona’s request to expand his trade list, still only Vancouver and Boston.
