So Edmonton finally gets relegated and Utica plays against the Canucks next year 5 times!

8-)
Imagine a SC final between the Canucks and the Comets...

If you were going to do this seriously you'd start by saying that the NHL had maybe 20 teams in the Premier League equivalent and 20 in the lower league. The lower league probably wouldn't include the AHL, but rather be bottom 10 teams + 10 new franchises. Players on demoted must have options to walk away from their contracts (same goes for relegated teams or teams that get promoted and need Premier-league talent). Only the premier league gets a chance at lord stanley.

On draft picks, get rid of them. Let players sign where they want, kill the cap BUT limit roster sizes. Players would then think hard about salary vs. play time.

Was just looking at the situation in Edmonton - man, ever since the Pronger trade kicked off a rebuild after the 2006 Stanley Cup Final appearance, it has been a lot of high picks and one rebuild after another...

July 3, 2006
To Edmonton: Joffrey Lupul, Ladislav Smid, 2007 1st round pick (later traded to Phoenix who chose #30 - Nick Ross), a conditional 1st round pick (Anaheim made the finals and gave up #22 overall in 2008 - Jordan Eberle), and a 2008 2nd round pick (later traded to NYI who chose #53 - Travis Hamonic)
To Anaheim: Chris Pronger

Here are the other relevant trades (dumped Smyth over a contract negotiation) and RFA compensations of their first rebuild:

March 8, 2006
To Edmonton: Dwayne Roloson
To Minnesota: 2006 1st round pick #17 - Trevor Lewis, and 2007 conditional 3rd round pick #67 - Spencer Machacek

Feb 27, 2007
To Edmonton: Robert Nilsson (#15 in 2003), Ryan O'Marra (#15 in 2005), 2007 1st round pick #15 Alex Plante
To NYI: Ryan Smyth

June 22, 2007
To Edmonton: 2007 1st round pick #21 - Riley Nash
To Phoenix: 2007 1st round pick #30 - Nick Ross, 2007 2nd round pick #36 - Joel Gistedt

July 5, 2007
To Edmonton: Allan Rourke, 2008 3rd round pick #73 Kirill Petrov (previously an Oiler pick, re-aquired in preparation for a RFA offer sheet)
To NYI: 2008 2nd round pick #53 Travis Hamonic

Aug 7, 2007
To Edmonton: Signed RFA Dustin Penner
To Anaheim: 2008 1st round pick #12 (later traded to LA then Buffalo who chose Tyler Myers), 2008 2nd round pick #43 - Justin Schultz, and 2008 3rd round pick #73 - Kirill Petrov

So here are their 1st round picks throughout these rebuilds...

(2003 #15 - Robert Nilsson)
2003 #22 - Marc-Antoine Pouliot
2004 #14 - Devan Dubnyk
2004 #25 - Robbie Schremp (acquired in 2003 Mike Comrie to Philadelphia trade)
(2005 #15 - Ryan O'Marra)
2005 #25 - Andrew Cogliano
2006 traded 1st pick for Dwayne Roloson
2007 #6 - Sam Gagner
2007 #15 - Alex Plante
2007 #21 - Riley Nash
2008 #22 - Jordan Eberle
2009 #10 - Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson
2010 #1 - Taylor Hall
2011 #1 - Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
2011 #19 - Oscar Klefbom (acquired in 2011 Dustin Penner to LA trade)
2012 #1 - Nail Yakupov
2013 #7 - Darnell Nurse
2014 #3 - Leon Draisaitl

Seven top ten picks in the last eight years. Ouch.

The shocking thing is just how bad their drafting has been. Outside of their #1 picks, who is with the team making an impact right now? Eberle? Yakupov and Draisaitl both have huge question marks and are probably being ruined by the Oiler's questionable philosophy around developing prospects.

Gagner and Cogliano were supposed to be the future. Then it was Eberle and Paajarvi. Then it was Hall and Eberle. Then Hall and RNH.

Lowe has been instrumental in the renewed success of the team both on and off the ice and will continue to work towards the continued success of the franchise in his new role.
Lowe obviously has no shame.

What we're currently watching is going to become Edmonton's "lost decade". It's probably going to be at least another 2 season before the Oilers make the playoffs, and that will give them the longest post-season drought in NHL history. That's really unbelievable.

Jesus H. Christ. Get a load of this BS.
In recent years, Lowe has been assisting the strategic rebuild of one of the outstanding franchises in the League and was an integral part of the management and scouting team that selected Taylor Hall with Edmonton’s first ever number one overall draft pick in 2010, as well as Ryan Nugent-Hopkins in 2011 and Nail Yakupov in 2012.
Yeah Kevin, those picks really took a shit ton of management skillz and scouting. Hall and RNH really were diamonds in the rough, unknowns if you will, when the Oilers went way off the board and selected those two first overall.

Un-be-fucking-lievable.

Ha.

For those of us who struggled with the pain of being a Canuck fan through the '80's any Oiler suffering/mess is highly appealing and pleasant to the eye.

Screw 'em.

They can wallow in mediocrity or worse until the end of time.

That profile really is something else.

And what's with the three separate player profiles at the bottom, all from different years? If they care enough to pile all this shit onto their website you'd think they'd care enough to make it coherent and readable..

Understood.

They used to routinely run up the score... then Semenko or Messier would cheep-shot a Nuck in the dying seconds.

They were... E V I L

For revenge, Canuck fans would chant GEEK-SKY GEEK-SKY GEEK-SKY every time Wayne touched the puck.

TSN is reporting the Oilers and Blue Jackets are working on a trade that would send David Perron to Columbus for Artem Anisimov.
Perron has two goals and eight assists in 22 games this season with the Oilers, his second year with the team. The Sherbrooke, Quebec, native has two years left on his current contract.
Anisimov, 26, has two goals and four assists over 14 games with Columbus this season. He also has two years left on his contract.

Isn't Anisimov the type of player the Oilers already have too many of?

Martin Brodeur added to Blues practice roster as the Blues and Brodeur try to work out a contract. Elliot down with what may be a long term injury.
