So, Gauthier is reported to have rejected a 4yr/13M AAV offer from the Ducks.

Let's put this offer in some perspective.

13M is 12.5% of the cap. Assuming a continuing bull salary market and a 9% annual increase in the cap, its rate against the cap falls to 11.4% in year 2, 10.5% in year 3, and 9.7% in year 4.

Another way to look at it, this rejected offer is similar value to a $9M deal in the flat cap era. The offer buys no free agent seasons.

What did players of similar value get in the flat cap days?

EP40 (remember, near a point a game player to start the career and a seeming lock to improve): 3 years, 7.35M AAV
Laine: 2 years, 6.75M (if we consider the 1 year after, 3 years, 7M AAV
Matthew Tkachuk: 3 years, 7M AAV.
Svechnikov: 8 years, 7.75M AAV.
Jack Hughes 8 years, 8M AAV.

None of these players is an exactly analog to Gauthier, of course. But I am looking at guys singing that first post-ELC contract who had already played at a near ppg or scored a bunch of goals (Petey and Hughes are centers of course, and got a bump for that and Hughes signed the contract during his breakout year, Svechnikov never really got quite to that level, but he was the next closest match from that era I could find). The players who had shown less or with the smallest ceiling signed the two max length deals; those who'd shown more were looking to sign at least one more deal before they were UFAs. Laine might be the closest analog over his first two years to where Gauthier is today -- which should serve as a cautionary tale, but Laine's value (80 goals in first 2 years) took a hit with a subpar third season (which sadly would be more like his future), and he signed the contract after that season. (He's also the least "flat cap" signing, as it took place before the NHL knew that it would be in a flat cap scenario for awhile -- so the bad third year and the fact people were assuming 4-5% cap increases when the deal was signed sort of cancel each other).

I think these examples show that what Gauthier was offered was very good value for a scoring winger coming off his second full year. Even assuming an accelerating cap. Gauthier's (reported) rejection is real hard ball. Anaheim is winning the race for worst offseason. Their cap situation snapped from flexible to oppressive, their blue line is a mess, and just as a rebuild should be paying off, it looks like they are at a crossroads.

The Jets have apparently had several months to deal with this, almost working out a trade with Buffalo. Hellebuyck had waived his NMC to go to Buffalo but the deal fell through. Both he and his agent are now going public to put pressure on Winnipeg as camp nears. He wants outing he wants out now.

Honestly, if I were the Jets I think I would have told Hellebuyck when he made the request that they had no intention of trading him unless he waives his NTC outright, and if he does that, the Jets will let the league know and will listen to offers. The plan is to give this core one more spin, and that's the plan whether he wants out or not. A no trade clause is a two way street -- Next year the full NTC becomes modified and the promise to the agent is that they will reevaluate..... And if he still wants to move, he'd better put in a good enough season for that to make sense for the team, whether its is sticking with the core, retooling, or starting a rebuild.

The Sabers would be stupid to pay much for Hellebuyck.
