I mean good on Tanev for maxing out his earning powers but that contract is, all things considered, ridiculous.

There's a non insubstantial case to be made that Tanev could be a somewhat effective player all the way to 40.

Why? Because his game has never been based on speed. Its never been based on his hands. His value is not tied to offense in any way. His game has never involved initiating contact (but by definition, must involve taking hits). His value has always presumed missing time to injury.

A defensive defensemen that relies on defensive IQ, positioning, and patience might be the best "type" to age well.

Having made that pitch, I fully expect Tanev and/or TO have scheduled his career ending injury in 3 or 4 years, and that in the negotiations, as small talk, they told Tanev about all of those other older guys they've signed in recent years and the kind of post-NHL player careers they've been having with TO's sponsorship....
