I never have been either Donny. It’s one of the reasons I was not a fan of Scooter’s contract…..as much as I don’t like the player (for all the reasons we’ve beat to death), I also don’t like the “all eggs in one basket” approach in a cap world.

I do think that if Bédard becomes a 100+ point pivot, who plays 200 feet, or Celebrini is actually available the following year, then spending that top ticket when your rebuild should be stepping into that playoff qualifying window is worth it…..and that is the ONLY time it is.

My reasoning here is that you grab this sort of player at that point because you should have the cap space to do it, and that top ticket will no longer be top ticket in 2 years when your team trajectory is no longer just playoff qualifying, but rather Big Dance or bust…..and hopefully for a few years.

So in this hypothetical, Bédard or Celebrini, still have 5 years of contract ahead of them when the team is expected to be competing for the Cup. By the time you are in year 3 of that 5 you can build your strength in numbers roster.

The 4 firsts doesn’t apply here. The player in question will be UFA at the end of his contract.

And Donny and I were discussing hypotheticals in regards to what some fans are hoping for, not what either of us is advocating to see happen. I don’t for a minute think either of those guys will leave much money on the table to “come home”…..5 years from now, when they have been in their respective cities for 8 years, one has to consider that they will have spent 33% of their life (and 100% of their independence) there. New roots grow quickly in early adulthood, so by 2030 there is a good chance Bédard considers Chicago to be home.

I’ve seen at least one projection that forecasts a $147M cap for the 2031-32 season. I think that’s a bit lofty, so for arguments sake let us say $140M at that point…..

So even thought I’m not holding out any hope for it, if Celebrini was actually an option to sign here in Vancouver for $20M with a $140M cap, I would do that all day.

Players are also going to see the McDavid failures and $$ left on table and think twice.

I agree it’s very unrealistic, particularly when one considers how much these players would lose in taxes, and how much more they would spend on amenities in NDP BC.

I don't see anyone taking a hometown discount hit - especially not the likes of Bedard or Celebrini. If they ever signed in Vancouver, it would be about potential to win and be Champs, with hometown sentimentality not playing a decisive role.

Who knows what will happen between now and five years from now? What if Chicago gets dysfunctional while Bedard becomes a top-5 centre and 'doesn't like the direction of the organization'? What if Vancouver is nowhere near ready to compete by that time?

What are the odds he would be nothing more than a West Coast version of John Tavares on a Vancouver squad destined for underachievement?

What we do know is that five years from now, RJ and the Twins may have an opportunity to sign Bedard. Whether it's a signing that makes sense or would even be probable, we'll see then.

Yeah I thinks it’s more wishful thinking than much truth to BC kids coming home to play at a discount.

Why would these kids all of a sudden want to play for the Canucks when the Canucks have shown little to no interest in drafting and developing kids from their own backyard.

That’s where we should start.
