A different time - even if not so long ago. We're in a different world than when they signed those deals.
Serious question here.

I haven’t been to Vancouver in about 20 years. Do you all think Vancouver is as attractive place to put down roots as it was when those team friendlies were signed? I know the hockey organization has deteriorated (falling behind in many *player perk* categories and now a long string of barely interrupted outside playoffs teams). But what of the city as a place to be from and raise a young family? I was super impressed by Vancouver 20 years ago, but I know a lot of American cities that I would have seriously considered 20 years ago I wouldn’t today and others where I wouldn’t have considered then but would today.

Edit add: to put it differently, I would have considered Vancouver an awesome destination 20 years ago. The city providing a value that makes up for smaller buying power of a paycheck or longer commutes — or in hockey player terms, a hometown discount. But is that still the case?

DD is backing this up:

Rick is correct. The Canucks have a trade option they’ve asked Myers to consider. He has protection and is taking his time to consider. I’m told it was presented two days ago. The veteran and his agent, J.P Barry continue to deliberate.

Especially not after this weekend. And perhaps even further back a few years when their juniors outgolded ours.

I know one group that likes it here (much to the dismay of a particular few in here), the Swedes. Many want to come here and unless I'm forgetting something obvious I don't recall any that demanded or asked out (Edler maybe when he preferred a quieter end to his career..any others?). We've definitely had to push a few out..Eriksson, OEL, and maybe soon to be Petey and Hogs, but for whatever reason this is a go-to city for the yellow and blue and that's probably why we end up with so many. The only time there's baggage is when it's performance related, otherwise they're practically little to no maintenance.

As for your question about the city itself, I'm not sure how to answer that other than I absolutely agree that it was a much better place 20 years ago..for too many reasons to get into here. Actually, more like 30/40 years ago..that was the sweet spot for me. This town was the shit back then, absolutely loved it. Still kinda do, but not nearly as much...night and day difference between now and then.

I've never been lucky enough to have lived in Vancouver. Visited the place a couple times and absolutely adored it. Just my career never took me there and I could never afford a place there now.

Further to UDub's question, I would say that what criticisms someone coming from the outside would have of Vancouver would say more about the person than the city. Tryamkin couldn't stand the smell of weed and the drugs around town, apparently. But it's not like being in Winnipeg or some seeming hockey wasteland; I mean, what is it about Columbus, anyway?

It appears Myers has been formally asked to waive:

If it is a solid team with decent family options and a chance to win this year and/or next Myers would do well to accede and waive.

Next year he is no longer NMC but rather MNTC and would lose a semblance of control.

Lancer wrote: Wed Feb 25, 2026 9:03 am I'm looking for which among the youngsters will amount to anything worth keeping when the new core comes into its own. No stars on the horizon unless Cootes turns a corner in his development, but I can see some depth pieces in the Hughes return in Buium and Ohgren. Rossi's too old to be anything more than a placeholder like Petey. Willander looks like a plausible option in the top-4 moving forward. The rest of the youngsters? May as well get a Lotto-Max ticket for better odds but worth watching to see if any beat the stacked odds.

What I'm looking for to stay interested over the next few years...

1. Certainly the young "hopefuls" to form our next core. Biggest problem is we don't have enough of them yet, certainly not any sure fire pieces at this point, but a few worthy of keeping an eye on for now.

2. The fire sale. Whatever we can sell off this year and what kind of a return they can yield. Not expecting much, a handful of 3rds/4ths I suppose would be fine with me. Unless Petey for a package of 1st/prospects is a realistic possibility..not holding my breath.

3. The placeholders with any kind of value. With Hronek we already know what he is and can get in return, only question is will he allow it in the next few years. Rossi's probably the main one I'm looking at. Considering the ask for him over the past offseason was a 1st, he should at least get you that now and in the foreseeable future. Can he improve his stock to net even more over the next couple of years?

4. Manufacturing value. Can we sign and/or trade for more placeholders who have the potential to flip for future value? They've done sign and flips before involuntarily (Soucy, Sherwood). Not sure you can find another score like Sherwood but need to try to do more of that, and we've never seen this team do anything creative like weaponize cap space.

5. Recovering value. Can Chytil and Demko get healthy again to help us recoup some futures? Perhaps not likely, but another thing to keep interest in. This would be bonus territory at this point.

6. Tolopilo. I guess this belongs in my first category but goaltending is probably the most important piece to impact a solid rebuild. Medvedev is way too much of a wildcard at this point. I have no idea if there's anything there with NT. Way too small a sample size and at 25 he maybe doesn't fit the age range. But could there be something there, if not a core piece maybe another placeholder for futures?

7. Tank. This one will take care of itself over the next 2, 3, 4, 5 years...don't you worry.

Tolopilo is 26 come April. Next season is the first season of “official” rebuild (this year they thought they could be a playoff team).

I’d say that any player who is over the age of 24 when the puck drops next season, is unlikely to be a key part of this team when it’s competent again.

Edit: iPhone autocorrected competitive to competent, but I figured let it stand.

'Tuzzi in the miracle market!

If I start watching again it will be for Willander, Buium, Ohgren, Cootes and one of the top 3 in this year's and hopefully next year's draft as well.

Draft 2 solid blue chippers and see those 6 develop into something and we have a chance.

Who's gonna run it though....

..I mentioned him before to great fanfare but I still like Evan Gold out of the Bruins system.

.....AND....if we ran my proposed EP trade from yesterday we'd be up 2 more opportunities.

Yeah, you caught me just before I edited in the bonus comment. Yeah man, I'm looking for bonuses and miracles. Aren't we all??

I'm definitely looking for more of a future trade asset hopeful than a key piece of the future core, but any positive development from him is a good thing so I'll mark it down as something to stay interested in. Caught my attention at the very least. Otherwise, very hard to find much else.
