Same age as my son. Kamyar was a great kid. His dad and I always talked on the sidelines. I know people are sometimes sceptical of folks from the Middle East but these like most others I’m sure were hard working happy people who really enjoyed Canada and everything it had to offer.

I have a friend who is Iranian, great guy, used to be a standup comedian, got out of Iran when the Ayatollah took over.

And don't forget The Iron Sheik.

There were at least ten Swedes on the plane. Probably more, as it is expected that people with dual citizenships used their Iranian passports at boarding. Some papers have stated 17, but the figure is still unclear.

The head of IT at work is Iranian and I used to have an Iranian neighbour; I sometimes get my hair cut by his brother.
Both my daughters have friends that are second generation Persian. There are lots of them in Sweden. First there was a wave of radical youth fleeing the Shah and Sawak, then there was the educated middle class (basically the same as the first group, but with a wider array of political views) fleeing the Ayatollah, and then there were lots of teenage boys fleeing conscription during the war with Iraq.

Most of the Persians who have come here are educated upper middle class, so they have generally adapted well to Swedish society. There are even two ministers (out of 22) in the current government who have a Persian background; Ibrahim Baylan (Minister for Business, Industry and Innovation) and Ardalan Shekarabi (Minister for Social Security).

I used to work with an iranian and he used to get pissed if i called him an A-rab....so i made sure to only call him that.

I had a few Iranian friends from work. One in particular would always tell everyone he's PERSIAN. Iranians are PERSIANS, not ARABs.

I used to enjoy getting under his skin like, dude, no one even asked you, Arab.

But this was a year after 911, so I can understand why they were sensitive and wanted to distance themselves. Iran didn't fund Osama, it was them Saudi Arabs! We just make rugs! I'm like, yeah, I can see the excellent weave on your head.

Persian cuisine was likely the worlds 1st cuisine

Arabic is a Semitic language, like Hebrew and Arameic (the language John the baptist and Jesus spoke, and that some Palestinians still speak today).

Persian (or Farsi) is a Indoeuropean language related to Latin, English, Russian and Swedish.

Not many, but the word for daughter sounds like dokh-tar, so that’s pretty obvious (”kh” being a guttural sound, like clearing your throat).

Also, the word Iran (and Iranian) is derived from Aryan, which is the word the old Indo-Iranians used for themselves. Their descendants mainly live in Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and northern India. Aryan was originally used, in modern usage, to describe that branch of the Indoeuropean languages, and those include the oldest Indoeuropean languages we have written records of. Thus some started using Aryan as a synonym for ancient Indoeuropeans, and then some idiots who thought the Indoeuropeans originally came from northern Europe (they didn’t, they arrived here during the bronze age) started specifically using it for people from northern Europe. Now that’s just wrong. Persians, the Pashtuns of Afghanistan and people from northern India are the true Aryans. Europeans, not so

Many Persians loathe Arabs, whom they consider desert dwelling goat herding nomads, while they themselves lived in cities with running water 6000 years ago, had written literature and dressed in silk long before Rome was built and while Europeans were still barbarians. They also came up with the first monotheistic religion, Zoroastrianism, long before the Hebrews invented theirs. So, yeah, they can be a bit cocky, and do not want to be confused with Arabs.
