Just how retarded is our scouting department? This is now a very very important question for obvious reasons.

The same old retardation won't be acceptable given they're finally committing to a tank and rebuild
It's probably too early to judge the current iteration, but they've taken some mid-rounds players who have improved their stock after the fact - Hunter Bruzucwzpolish was a desirable trade asset and is now considered among the Flames better prospects, Sawyer Mynio has moved up in Vancouver, the Medvedev pick last year looks pretty good although after a hot start he's not exactly lighting up the OHL. I don't see anything in their first round selections that gives cause for concern, although Lekkerimaki hasn't panned out the way we'd like to this point.

If the team is going to let him stay out of that particular arena, then maybe he’s happy to play his trade and do everything he can to help this team pull a U-turn when the rebuild gets to that intersection.

You do need guys like that.

I would keep Hronek and Myers as the vets on the blueline.

Garland and Brock up front.

Jettison the rest.
If your gonna change the culture, the Chaos Giraffe and longest tenured Canuck have to go.

The sooner the better.

Kane, Blueger, Forbort (if he gets back), Chytil, a goalie, Brock and Meyers.... all gotta go.

I hate to say it, we have to keep Petey until another serviceable top 6 center comes to the team somehow.

Sure Wood is dealt. Decent value. Stout player, wish we’d had a whole team of him

This is a solid and fair return. I was intrigued by the prospect of a 2nd and a 21 year old former first rounder but upon reflection that's more of the classic Canucks style last decade (Sven Baertschi type reclamation projects) and it's probably safer to settle for two 2nd rounders. Now it's up to the scouting departments.

Also there was so much chatter about the Canucks holding out for a 1st rounder but their market among contenders was much smaller. The following teams DO NOT have a 1st round pick in 2026:

Colorado
Tampa
Vegas
Dallas
Edmonton
Florida
Toronto

Frankly the only concerning rumour I have heard is the Canucks offering 4 x 4 to Sherwood. I absolutely love the guy and he was an awesome signing but the guy is the perfect player for a contending team - i.e. wrong player for this one! He brings a lot to the table and I hope he gets his well earned money but the Canucks have no business wasting money on him right now.

One problem this team has had is that its high-character/leader players had questionable skill, while its high-skill players had questionable heart. I could count the players on the team who have both on one hand - and have fingers enough to spare to hold a martini glass.

You can't do that. You need established vets that can lead and show young players how to put in the work. Replacing the in free agency isn't a safe bet because you will be paying through the nose and we will end up with what we ended up with under Benning.

The old adage: Those who can't do teach.

It's true. Players like Myers and Boeser have the know-how to teach, even if they lack the capability to do at times.

Boeser probably just doesn't bring a return in trade that makes sense (I know, I sound like Gillis there lol). If he can morph into a Tyler Toffoli, well that's a good thing for a team of young up and comers.

You absolutley can do that.

How many veterans are you saying the team needs?
Debrusk - Petey - Rookie
Hoglander - Rossi - Rookie
DOC - Raty - Rookie
Ohgren - Rookie - Karlsson

Buium - Hronek
MPetey - Willander
Dpetey - Mancini

Old Goalie
New goalie

boom new culture is 99% set. It will be totally done if you find another top 6 forward

I thought the first round rumors were plausible, and I would take a late first rounder over two picks in the mid second round any day of the week. But I Sherwood was slowing down (offensively), the injury was a realization that its time to get something done rather than risk losing him for nothing, and 2 seconds for a guy signed to play on the 4th line is amazing. How many years do we see legit second line wingers not being rented for more than a 2d? And this year's second has a lot better chance of being in the 40s -- maybe even late 30s -- than the 50s.

The return is close to what I expected. I'm solidly with you in the camp that doesn't want this management team staying around to clean up their mess and starting over, but as little sense as keeping these guys around makes, you just know it's what this owner is going to do.

soon to be 31yrs old, only his third season in the NHL, on an expiring rental contract and looking to get paid

for

two pie in the sky darts and some meat for Abbotsford

if they'd done the same with Hoglander two years ago, those darts may be starting to hit the board about now ... or the floor

I think you need a couple of tenured vets in the top-12 and a couple in the top-6.

By tenured I mean with the team. Those vets are usually already on existing contracts, or can be retained on existing deals.

Boeser's contract will not seem terrible in 2 year's time if he morphs into a Toffoli alongside a couple of other young wingers. Also not opposed to it being DeBrusk instead of Brock.

Garland is certainly a play driver of sorts, and his contract will also age well, for the first half at least.

I can see Myers sticking for another 2-3 years on a reasonable deal, and Hronek is already inked long term on a similarly good contract.

Finding guys like that in free agency would cost more, and their commitment to the local team and fans would not be the same.

I think you add a couple of other vets via free agency. A Jay Beagle-type (just don't pay so much for so long), those guys have legendary reputations for professionalism, work ethic, commitment to fitness, preparation, and dedication to their craft.

The following roster has a few of presumptions for next year.....

1. Two Peteys are dealt.
2. Hoglander is dealt
3. We draft McKenna
4. One of Demko or Lankinen are moved
5. DeBrusk or Boeser are traded.....you move whichever one brings the best return.

McKenna - Rossi - Boeser/DeBrusk
Ohgren - Vet - Garland
DOC - Chytil - Karlsson
UFA - Sasson - UFA

Buium - Hronek
Vet - Willander
DPetey - Myers

Demko/Lankinen
Backup

People may raise an eyebrow at Rossi as the 1C.....well he will probably be our most talented pivot once EP40 is moved. Rossi excelled in Minnesota when paired with a speedy, smart winger.....enter McKenna. I also don't think we get a better C than him back in that trade, but we likely can get a 2C that is better than Chytil. Chytil also has some two-way chops, and if he stays healthy is hopefully replaced by Cootes when the former's contract runs its course after next season.

Ohgren is going to move up the depth chart during a rebuild. His efforts have been outstanding, and he's a fucking beast. There's a poor man's Landeskog or speedy Holmstrom in there I think. That style of player could be a great compliment to Garland's whirling, wheeling, dealing, and if you get a decent enough pivot between them, you might be surprised.

Karlsson is the Swedish Alex Burrows. I can see him climbing the lineup over the next two seasons and possibly ending up in the top-6 with the right chemistry.

I've seen enough of M-Pete to know I'd rather turn that page if he's willing to move on. I don't see a guy that screams mentor, I don't see a guy with anything more than #6 stick and puck skills, I don't see an above average PK'er, and there's no offense there what-so-ever. Even during a rebuild $5.5M (see I got it right this time JPP) is too much to stash on the bottom pairing when the same can be had for $3M.

We fans do tend to get overly excited about darts.....which as you point out, often end up on the floor.

Hoglander can still turn into a dart though.
