New Years Eve 1989, I was hanging out in Salem on the north coast of Jamaica. My girlfriend of the time, her sister, brother in law, and I went to a concert in Browns Town. We bought our tickets from the van at the gate of the soccer stadium and headed into the stadium which wasn't much more than field surrounded by a 12 foot high concrete block wall.
Typical Jamaican fashion, the show that was to start at 9pm still hadn't started 2.5 hours later. Rumours began to circulate in the crowd that all the bands that were booked were playing at a show in Kingston that night and would never make it. That it was a scam by the show promoters.
Yet another announcement from the stage that everything was good and to keep waiting was met with bottles and rocks being thrown at the stage and among the crowd. When the van with the ticket sales began to move from inside the stadium towards the gate, the gunshots began.
Amongst the stampeding mass, I managed to get down behind a car that parked inside the stadium near the back wall. A guy appeared beside me with a pistol and began shooting aimlessly across the hood of the car. I yelled at him to stop shooting and he asked why? I told him, "because someone will shoot back."
He gave me a look of "what are you talking about you stupid white man, " and moved onto the next car down the line. Somehow I got carried in the crowd heading for the gate and found my friends on the street outside. They had gone over the wall when the gunfire began. Everyone was fine so we drove to Ocho Rios for beers at a strip club.

Tonight, my son won't let me take him to emergency. He fell shovelling out a neighbours driveway. Maybe its a severe bruise, maybe its a broken collar bone. At least it's not a concussion.
