Well, ultimately they didn’t have the space to bring them back. If you add Tanev and Toffoli to the team and somehow subtract Eriksson and Sutter/Beagle it’s a very good hockey club. The Brown Wizard wrote: ↑Wed Dec 30, 2020 7:36 am I get the feeling that the canucks weren't that high on bringing back Toffoli or Tanev and had planned on moving forward without them regardless of cap concerns
I think they wanted Marky back but had a plan B ready to go when the term and dollars became redonkulous

Re: Canucks News N Notes 2020-2021
I hope it wasn't just the Covid talking, but imo, Benning has had a great off season. I would have liked to keep Marky and Tanev on 2 year deals, but they both wanted term. Buh-bye.Doyle Hargraves wrote: ↑Wed Dec 30, 2020 7:17 amThe simple fact is, that they could have retained both of those guys, not that they wouldn’t have eventually become been bad contracts themselves. I’m of the opinion that both of those guys would provide far better bang for the buck than Roussel, Eriksson, Beagle, Sutter etc.Madcombinepilot wrote: ↑Wed Dec 30, 2020 7:11 amNot sure I agree with that. If we could have afforded them now, In 2 years, we don’t want Tanev and Toffoli as we won’t be able to afford the expected cap hit for The Lads with the flat COVID cap.Doyle Hargraves wrote: ↑Wed Dec 30, 2020 7:01 am Point was UW, that the shitty contracts have fucked the team more than COVID. Could have easily retained Tanev and Toffoli without a couple of the useless pieces of shit taking up space on the 4th line.
For the record I don’t like a four year term for Tanev, but it’s a damn sight better contract than any of Eriksson, Beagle, Sutter, Roussel.
Toffoli was signed to a solid deal by Montreal
I do hope that Benning is done signing 4 year deals with our bottom 6 at inflated prices. I believe he is done with it, as we now have the talent from the minors to fill those roles, and tradeable assets. Benning was forced into the free agency pool, and "desperation" was not a good cologne to be wearing into the meetings with agents.
Once the 3 bad contracts expire (loui, beags and rooster), and lou's recapture are gone, I could see us having a really strong team. Heck, we are already contenders, with about $20m of dead cap that expires in the next 2 years. It's not excited to get hard over that.

Tanev's impending departure was pretty obvious by the complete lack of extention dialogue all year.Doyle Hargraves wrote: ↑Wed Dec 30, 2020 7:42 amWell, ultimately they didn’t have the space to bring them back. Toffoli is already a terrible skater and hes not getting any younger. They ponied up for a rental and let him go. Meh...

Re: Canucks News N Notes 2020-2021
Toffoli had great stats for us during the regular season. We still went 4-6 as a team though. And, his stats in the post season were not spectacular. That could be from his return from injury, or he just reverted to his normal self. I am also glad we didn't lock him up for 4 years. He looked great at times, but also invisible at others. And, I don't see a spot for him on the team in 3 or 4 years. Meh +1The Brown Wizard wrote: ↑Wed Dec 30, 2020 7:54 amTanev's impending departure was pretty obvious by the complete lack of extention dialogue all year.Doyle Hargraves wrote: ↑Wed Dec 30, 2020 7:42 am

Toffoli would still be the third best winger on the team for the foreseeable future. Yes he’s slow, so is Boeser. You can carry a couple slugs up front.,If you want to improve overall team speed, purge Beagle, Louis, Sutter, and one legged Roussel. I’ll give Roussel a mulligan due to off season surgery in 2019, but he could be baked. He has a lot of hard miles on him bad will be turning 32.

Re: Canucks News N Notes 2020-2021
Toffoli was ok sure but LA knows he floats when he gets comfortable and decided to flush him out. Like Tsico said, he has only average numbers for being our 3rd best winger. Very meh...Doyle Hargraves wrote: ↑Wed Dec 30, 2020 8:10 am Toffoli would still be the third best winger on the team for the foreseeable future. Yes he’s slow, so is Boeser. Sutter is gone this coming summer, Roussel gets a mulligan, Beagle still brings faceoffs and contributes to the PK plus is a character guy.
Remove the atrocious Eriksson boat anchor and the team is in good shape moving forward.

Agree with most of your post, but Beagle is a joke when you already have Sutter. He should be a coach at this point.

Beagle is only paid $500k too much, so let’s keep it in perspective.Doyle Hargraves wrote: ↑Wed Dec 30, 2020 8:56 am Agree with most of your post, but Beagle is a joke when you already have Sutter. He should be a coach at this point.
If Loui is not on the roster and we were not saddled with recapture, nobody would be complaining about the contract except people who were looking for something to complain about
It’s when you add the 500k for beagle and rooster, and the extra million for Sutter together; you add that to the recapture and Loui.. that gets people tied into knots and trying to save a penny.
The 'Chain of Command' is the chain I am going to beat you with until you understand I am in charge.

You could replace Beagle for 1 million. He’s at least 2 million overpaidMadcombinepilot wrote: ↑Wed Dec 30, 2020 9:01 amBeagle is only paid $500k too much, so let’s keep it in perspective.Doyle Hargraves wrote: ↑Wed Dec 30, 2020 8:56 am Agree with most of your post, but Beagle is a joke when you already have Sutter. I think they wanted to get a deal done with Tanev but he played hardball this time so fortunately Nate was right there. Fantastic pick-up, not to mention a little luck with the circumstances of him coming available. The Brown Wizard wrote: ↑Wed Dec 30, 2020 7:36 am I get the feeling that the canucks weren't that high on bringing back Toffoli or Tanev and had planned on moving forward without them regardless of cap concerns

Just a guess but I'm thinking Jim knew exactly where Marky's camp stood for quite a while. The negotiations were dragging. I realize goalies can
sometimes play well in to there mid to late thirties but I'm optimistic it went the right way in the long run.
As for Toffoli, pretty sure he was your typical trade deadline pick-up for a late season push and playoffs. Even if Boeser had not been hurt, this quite likely would / could, have happened. Travis Green didn't really have full confidence in Virtanen as a top six.
oops

Has there ever been a goalie play into their mid 40s?
