Don’t get me wrong Mëds but of those in the average age group a very high percentage would have died from pneumonia or COPD or other lung ailments
Or just died... by old age.
Protect our elderly the best we can absolutely!!
But gee whiz you can’t bankrupt our countries and expect everything to come up roses either

Rats, how do you propose to keep the most vulnerable safe?
My wife works in a long term care home. Does she quarantine from the rest of her family so she can work or do all of our household needs to quarantine as the virus runs rampant through society and the rest of the health system?
With opening of larger gatherings and contacts ala many parts of the US, hospitals become over run, Italian outbreak triage becomes necessary an refrigerated containers become makeshift morgue that the unclaimed bodies go to mass graves NYC style.
The concept of flattening the curve to keep from overwhelming the healthcare system is still valid and won't be going anywhere. The reopenings that we have is because the virus and its transmission has become better understood and for the most part, British Columbians have been respecting each other.
The Kelowna partiers are now at 27 cases and growing. That is the type of incident that leads to US style uncontrolled spread.

The county south of us was all prepped to have their Annual county fair next week (the carnival had even arrived). They finally cancelled the bulk of it - BUT - are keep the car races with regular grandstand seating. Governors are overriding local regulations for mask compliance. Just watched a video of 2 guys trying to give masks away at an LA beach (very respectful, too) - they were met with insults and threats of violence. Walmart is finally requiring masks- but I feel sorry for the greeters who have to deal with the inevitable assholes who show up.
In other new, the lack of commerce is leading to a coin shortage - this in turn has a LOT people freaking out about the conspiracy to convert the country to a cashless economy.
I didn't think people could get any fucking stupider, but it's growing exponentially.

When this thing broke they said it was going to kill in the 10% range, the then revised it to around 7%.
Now we’re seeing much much lower figures.

Vancouver Coastal Health has confirmed an outbreak of COVID-19 at St. Paul's Hospital. (Tina Lovgreen/CBC)
An outbreak of COVID-19 has been detected in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver, according to a notice from Vancouver Coastal Health.
The news was shared in a facility outbreak bulletin from the health authority on Thursday afternoon. Restrictions to prevent transmission of the disease have been put in place.
Shaf Hussain, spokesperson for Providence Health, which operates the hospital, said the NICU has been shut down and the patients transferred to a temporary satellite unit.
"We have strict infection control protocols that are immediately followed. We work closely with professionals in public health — they've done an amazing job for B.C.," Hussain told CBC.
B.C. health officials encourage wearing of masks, as 21 new cases of COVID-19 announced
St. Paul's NICU provides 24-hour care for premature babies and other newborns with serious health problems who need specialized attention. It is separate from the hospital's maternity unit, which remains open and ready to deliver babies, according to Hussain.
Hussain couldn't say whether COVID-19 has been detected in a patient or staff members, or how many people have been affected. Outbreaks can be declared in B.C. health-care settings with just one case.
"We're working with the Vancouver Coastal Health medical health officer in leading the response to this exposure," he said.
The NICU is now being thoroughly cleaned to prevent further transmission

80% of those that have died were 80 or older.
Another 10% were 70-79. Only 4% were younger than 60.
But still, every premature death is lamentable.
Also, apart from those that have died, there are people who have suffered strokes or have gotten permanent lung damage as a result of the disease, and people who have spent a couple of weeks in intensive care lose virtually all muscle mass and need to spend months in rehab just being able to walk again.
I mean, absolutely, most people only experience mild symptoms, or none at all, but to some it’s devastating.
There is definitely some sort of trade off between a functioning society and minimizing the death toll, but if you do nothing, you’d overwhelm the hospitals, leading to a much higher death toll, as they won’t be able to care for all that need it.
Thus flattening the curve is important until there are treatments and vaccines available.
Sweden has tried to find some sort of middle ground, but we’re getting a lot of flack for not shutting down completely.
Yet our health officials have strived to find measures that are sustainable over time. All our neighbours that had lockdowns are now reopening, even allowing amusement parks to open, while we maintain our maximum 50 people rule. We’ll see how it all plays out.
