You’ll be treading in dangerous Calgary Flame/Johnny Gaudreau waters if we find ourselves in the 2026-27 season without an extended Hughes. I'd say no. If he lets the Sept 15 or whatever time limit expire and can't take advantage of the outgoing collective 8 year extension then I look to move him shortly thereafter. Id let that leverage/opportunity to cash in large expire before id entertain that move. If he doesn't sign an extension for the 8 year deal then he obviously intends to jet

A smart manager would have locked in Hughes and Pettersson for 8 years apiece when they signed their second contracts. But the additions of Tucker Poolman and Jason Dickinson were so important for the team at the time.
