If Hughes is still waffling on a contract extension next summer or around the draft, leading up to the draft, is that the time to execute a trade? You’ll be treading in dangerous Calgary Flame/Johnny Gaudreau waters if we find ourselves in the 2026-27 season without an extended Hughes. I’ll be damned to hell if the greatest Canuck in Canuck history (drafted by Benning, thanks to Holland) walks for nothing in return. This would make the Hamhius walk feel like an ouchy.

Lol. The Hamhuis walk was barely an ouchie at the time.

Losing a Norris-winning, franchise-level, 1D, for nothing would be a gut job compared to the departure of a 2/3 steady-Eddie.
Somewhere in NW BC trying (yet again) to trade a(nother) Swede…..

I'd say no. If he lets the Sept 15 or whatever time limit expire and can't take advantage of the outgoing collective 8 year extension then I look to move him shortly thereafter. Id let that leverage/opportunity to cash in large expire before id entertain that move. If he doesn't sign an extension for the 8 year deal then he obviously intends to jet

Listen Interior, if Hughes walks it would be a wound of the worst kind, a war wound, a wartime amputee we would be that would make the Hamhius walk feel like a cat scratch, a boo boo.

A smart manager would have locked in Hughes and Pettersson for 8 years apiece when they signed their second contracts. But the additions of Tucker Poolman and Jason Dickinson were so important for the team at the time.

If Hughes and a t committed well before the Sept deadline for the new CBA it would be better to trade him to a team he wants to go to so he can sign for 8 years there. The return would be better.

But he will re-sign with us. I’m not worried.
