The draft is a funny business, you win some you lose some, had Kenny Holland drafted Michigan’s Quinton Hughes instead of Zadina, who is currently playing for Davos of the Swiss League, Stevie Y would be sitting mighty pretty right about now. But Detroit would get its revenge the following year where we see Holland moving on to Edmonton drafting Broberg in the very next draft. Prior to Holland picking Broberg, Rob Blake drafts Turcotte instead of Seider laying up Seider very nicely for the new regime in Detroit.

The draft is a funny business. How good is Detroit with a top pairing of Seider and Hughes?

Who knows? If they drafted Hughes would Benning have picked Zadina?

If you want to talk draft, my thought is hit as many singles and doubles as you can. Don't screw up on top 10 picks. That kneecaps teams when it's done too many times.

Even if Trevor or Petr Nedved weren't the cream of the crop, they were good solid players that you build around or move for different pieces. Sedins were good picks, Hughes, Petterson, etc.

Juolevi, Virtanen and Podkolzin were rancid picks.

Jake - dumb as hell, like Elmer type dumb. spoiled brat but a busted fucked up shoulder. He's David Booth #2.

Olaf- Zero heart, zero passion, zero compete. Yes he got hurt. But he was as tough as a bag of baby shit.

Podkolzin- lots of compete and a great kid but had brick qhands and a complete lack of awareness where to be on the ice.

Blob the frustration of you is your position with Benning as him being (in your view) the only GM capable of screwing up a top 10 pick. Every year, every draft past, present and future there are/will be busts in the top 10 of the draft. Get over Juolevi my friend.

I'm over Juolevi. I just said don't screw up your top 10 picks. I switched gears to respond to your Zadina post. Elmo was 2/5 on top 20 picks. You conveniently skirted the fact why I think Jim Benning was an embarrassment to the franchise and the city to disparage multiple cup winner and future HHOFer Ken Holland. I guess he was in on the skullet tossing.

Try to keep up Bumpty.

IMO Jim Bennings drafting record or what he trared draft picks for are petty ok in my books, regardless of what happened with some of those assets later, in which I too am not happy about some:

2014 - McCann, Demko, Forsling
2015 - Boeser, Gaudette
2016 - a complete bust
2017 - Pettersson
2018 - Hughes
2019 - Podkolzin (lookin’ good in EDM) Hoglander
2020 - traded 1st pick for Miller (now isM. Pete, Mancini, Chytil, O’Connor)
2021 - traded first pick for Garland (selected to US Olympic camp)

He doesn’t deserve criticism on the whole regarding his draft assets but yes some of his trades and UFA signings are putrid for sure. I have mixed views on the garland, OEL acquisition. I’m a huge fan of Garland. Also I don’t think we should’ve traded OEL, he’s performed decently since but him and Tocchet are like oil and water. Ths Miller trade in 2020 no complaints about it. Mukhamedullin still has yet to transition to the NHL. I really don’t get the Podkolzin trade, he’s a serviceable 3rd line type, but this might have something to do with Tocchet not liking him.

Just because Blob doesn't put Benning on a pedestal, doesn't mean he hates him.

...
The counterpoint to this, for discussion and argument's sake.

Virtanen.....

Jake was a not a terrible pick in the moment. He was a power forward, something the Canucks desperately needed, who could skate like the wind, and also had a very heavy shot. I think some blinders may have gone on because of his hometown proximity to the big club. What made him a bad pick is that he was a top-10 selection that was not BPA. So long as there are no glaring character issues (Ho Sang), you have to go with skill and IQ in those spots and trust in biology (that the draftee will physically develop into a body that can handle the rigours of the NHL).

Nylander was leagues more intelligent, and also much heavier in the skill department. But there were serious questions about his frame and toughness at the time.

Fiala was not projecting better at the time, but definitely had better IQ.

Pastrnak was a serious work in progress, he wasn't moving the needle for any teams in the top-15.

Larkin was the guy they should have taken. Virtanen's better in skating, a pivot, good hockey IQ, and better than average size. His production in the UHL-18 and NCAA was excellent.

This was a miss, but Jake was a local kid who possessed attributes that the Canucks, and their fans and local media, had long identified as being absent from the team since the 2011 SCF. The big mistake was not moving on from him quickly.

Juolevi.....

When you look at that draft all one can say is, fuck me did Finland ever pull one over on everyone. How those guys went ahead of Tkachuk, McAvoy, DeBrincat, Kyrou, Sergachev, and Thompson, is beyond anyone. None of them were particular special prior to the WJC. Yet, somehow, Laine, Puljujarvi, and OJ, went from being average performers with their junior teams, to world beaters in a 2 week tournament, and then on to staking the majority claim to the top-5 in that year's NHL draft. It's actually mind blowing how badly that one tournament skewed things and screwed up scouts league-wide.

This was another top-10 selection where Benning drafted based upon current organizational need on the NHL roster (as well as pipeline) instead of going BPA, the Canucks should have moved on from him very quickly.

Podkolzin.....

No complaints here. 10th overall and rightly so. The only name on that list that I would even possibly have preferred is Peyton Krebs. But at the time, it was a dice roll everywhere. The 2019 draft was absolute shit.

Easy big fella, Jim would fit in seamlessly on a baby boomer show like the Andy Griffiths Show, he’s salt of the earth. He’d give you the shirt off his back.

He'd fit in in Essondale. Worst GM since Jack Gordon.

I don't want his grubby shirt other than to use it to floss my asscrack.

He would fit in on Sling Blade.

It’s displaced aggression. The seed of his hate stems from the 3 seasons after 2011, quite possibly the single worst GM’Ing we’ve seen this side of the continent, see his acquisitions post 2011 - “Kassian will be our Lucic”. Nonis gifted the Players Agent a team on a silver platter, a young core that was the envy of the league with over the top excellent goalkeeping that carried him to the 2011 finals but when it came time for Gillis to step off the coattails of previous GM’s to make some serious splashes of his own to win us the cup he fumbled the ball in two first rounds of the playoffs, big time, quite sadly the two most disappointing and devastating moments in Canuck history thanks to the Agent, and then, he went on to sink the miserable ship even further in the 2013-14 season. It’s why he’s never been hired again.
