72 is young, but in your 70’s the grim reaper starts calling the shots

UW I definitely cannot debate at that level, especially being a Canadian. All I can add is, a country as divided yours, compromise in one’s politics and a less divisive POTUS would be what your country could use some of right now. The constant missle firing at each other has made everyone forget the greater good.

Regardless of what he has said, what has been misquoted, wrongly attributed to him, or taken out of context, I hope we all agree he should not have been killed for it.

It has been reinstated, and now for both genders. Back when I did my military service it was just mandatory for men.
The problem though is that with all the cuts that were made to the military, they can’t take in everyone, and they claim the army doesn’t need everyone either, so it’s only a fraction that actually do it. Back in the day 30-40 000 conscripts made military service every year. The way it works now all 18 year olds must fill out a form. After that some 28 000 are called to undergo testing and interviews and then in the end only some 6000 are selected to do military service. We’re investing heavily in our military now, since russia invaded Ukraine, and I hope we can gradually increase the number of conscripts till we’re back to the old numbers again.

Finland never got rid of their military service and still do it like it used to be in Sweden. They train some 27 000 conscripts each year, 80 % of the male population undergo military training and women can volunteer to do it. But Finland borders russia and they have been attacked and invaded by them innumerable times, so they understand the need for having access to a large pool of trained soldiers.

We should all be more like Finland.

And yes, during the testing and interviews they weed out the wackos who should not be trusted with guns. After the mandatory service was cancelled we tried to make do with hiring soldiers instead, but the problem with that was that a very large part of those who volunteer are exactly the ones you do not want.

Well, people aren’t reacting to what the russians do to Ukrainians either.

We all (society at large) have become numb to the endless daily violence and that there lies the problem, “oh well, just another senseless killing today, next.”
