Must love the game..

45 games played away from breaking Gordie Howe's record of all time games played. Pretty sure that was a factor in his decision making.

That's not at all what happened with Gordie. When Howe retired from the NHL at the end of the 70/71 season he was 43 years old, the only reason he came back and signed in the WHA was to play with his boys and he kept that going for one more season in the NHL to complete the experience as a 51 year old.

I still have the program from his final game in Vancouver as a Hartford Whaler March 28, 1980. How old were you back then? lol

18---ish. My parents talked with Gordie Howe often. Went to meetings with him quite a few times. It was the am-way those days. I was away
most of the time.

The Canucks don’t have to carry a 23 man roster. If they need to they can go with a 20 man roster and take 3m off the cap, until someone goes on LTIR. They can easily get under the cap if they do that even if Ferland is healthy. To start the season they will likely have their AHL team players in town practicing if the AHL season is delayed. So going with a 20 man roster and constantly calling up and down players from within the city shouldn’t be a problem until someone goes on LTIR. As situated, I don’t believe Benning will have any problems or have to make any additional moves to be cap compliant. Not saying he won’t, but it won’t be necessary.

I would say that he should not be gifted a spot as all, but has to try out during training camp, just like everyone else.

Would we all want a health Ferland - I believe so but it would be frustrating for all to have play a couple games and gone. When can a doctor stand up and say no? Hell maybe they can't even do this?

I think if a 'Healthy' Ferlund is 100%, then yes you want that dynamic on the ice.

If he is 95% and prone to another concussion, then no.

Problem is, He seems to want to play so bad that he appears to be less than accurate to the Docs so they can clear him to play. Unless he has some other kind of undetectable brain thingy happening which is fooling everyone...

Gillis shut down Malhotra against his wishes for his own safety. Gillis didn’t want to live with the guilt if something bad happened to him. Maybe Benning should do the same for Ferland. He’s taking a risk with the rest of his life at this point. I’d love to have him play his game for this team, but if he gets irreparably hurt, it’d be pretty hard to live with for a GM. He’s had too many concussions to think it won’t happen again.
